Three Squatters Arrested on Charges of Grand Theft, Burglary

Three people, part of a larger group reportedly squatting in a bank-owned home, were arrested Thursday, March 2, in La Cañada Flintridge on charges related to burglary theft, according to Alan Chu, a sergeant at the Crescenta Valley Sheriff’s Station.
He said one of those arrested was a 36-year-old male, who remains in custody and faces charges of grand theft. The other two, a 36-year-old female and a 23-year-old male who are both charged with burglary, were released on their own recognizance Monday, Chu said. Former LCF Man Charged With Murders Deemed Unfit for Trial

Rather than stand trial in court, the man accused of beating to death his two nephews with a bolt cutter in Arcadia and attacking his estranged wife in La Cañada Flintridge with a wood-splitting tool will be sent to a psychiatric hospital.

On Jan. 11, Judge Roberto Longoria of the Mental Health Courthouse ruled that former LCF resident Deyun Shi, 45, is mentally incompetent to stand trial, according to multiple media reports. That means Shi is unable to understand the nature of the criminal proceedings or to rationally assist his lawyers in the conduct of defense.

LCF Optometrist Sees Through Scam Attempt

Scammers attempted to coerce a La Cañada Flintridge optometrist’s office into sending money their way this week.
Different callers rang La Cañada Eye Care on Tuesday and claimed falsely to be Southern California Edison, stating that the business was delinquent in paying its electric bill and that the power would be cut off shortly.
“They did it with a certain amount of force, with pressure, with a timed [deadline],” said Dr. Tony Chahine. “And, oh, the irony of it all.”
Chahine’s office is solar powered.

Sheriff Suspects Serial Crew in Six LCF Burglaries

A crew of burglars appears to have targeted La Cañada Flintridge last week, breaking into six residences on Friday, Dec. 16, according to reports from the Crescenta Valley Sheriff’s Station.
“I think it’s one crew hitting a whole lot of people in the same area,” said Detective Alan Chu of the spate of break-ins, most of which were reported in southern LCF. “That’s just my opinion, but all of a sudden we had a whole cluster of them in the same area, and in just one night.”
