Junior League’s Little Black Dress Program to Fight Poverty

The Junior League of Pasadena will hold its weeklong poverty awareness campaign from Monday, Feb. 6, to Friday, Feb. 10. Many JLP members will wear a single black dress or black ensemble to work each day to illustrate the effects poverty can have on a woman’s access to resources, confidence and opportunities.
This low-cost operation will raise awareness among JLP members and the public about the work being done to support and develop the potential of women by initiating conversations with colleagues, family and friends. Beyond seeing people at their places of work and in the community, these members will be documenting the emotions and tribulations that this project brings up through their individual social media outlets using the #TheLBDI and #JLPLBDI.
The project is meant to highlight some local statistics:
• A third of single mothers are faced with spending half of their income on housing.
• The median earnings for women 16 years and older who work full time for 12 months is $54,000. For a similar group of men it is $59,000, producing an earnings gap of $.91.
• Only 42% of 25- to 34-year-old women have earned an associate’s, bachelor’s or graduate degree.
• Compared to other states, California is home to the greatest number of women-owned business, making up 30% of all companies in the state.
