Pasadena Literary Alliance ‘Open Book’ Event Jan. 24

The Pasadena Literary Alliance will hold its “Open Book” series event featuring Percival Everett on Wednesday evening, Jan. 24, at Boston Court (70 N. Mentor Ave., Pasadena). The two-hour event, with Everett in conversation with David Ulin, begins at 7 p.m.
Everett has been called “one of our culture’s preeminent novelists, a nonpareil ironist-satirist,” by the Los Angeles Times. He is the author of nearly 30 books, including “Erasure,” “I’m Not Sidney Poitier” and his latest novel, “So Much Blue.” In addition to being named one of L.A. Times Best Books of 2017, this most recent book was described by NPR as “a generous, thrilling book by a man who might well be America’s most under-recognized literary master.” The Boston Globe review noted “three stories, scattered across time . . . taken together they add up to a masterpiece.”
In a rare public appearance, Everett will discuss his work and journey as a writer. A distinguished professor of English at USC, he is the recipient of an Academy Award from the American Academy of Arts and Letters, the Hurston/Wright Legacy Award, the Believer Book Award and the 2006 PEN USA Center Award for Fiction.
Meanwhile, Ulin is an author and former book critic and editor for the Los Angeles Times. A 2015 Guggenheim Fellow and recipient of the California Book Award, he is assistant professor of English at USC.
Building on the successful Pasadena Festival of Woman Authors event which has been presented annually since 2009, the vision for the new Open Book series is “to provide opportunities for the community to enjoy authors of all kinds — both established and emerging, national and local, men and women, writers of fiction and nonfiction — in settings that complement the author’s work or background and allow for engagement with the attendees,” said Pasadena Literary Alliance Board President Katie Poole.

The ticket price of $65 includes pre-program reception with wine and light appetizers; post-program dessert, coffee and conversation; a signed copy of “So Much Blue”; and ongoing support of the Pasadena Literary Alliance grantees.
