In mid-January, 1st- through 8th-grade Clairbourn School students were presented with a weeklong engineering design challenge. Students were asked to build a flying craft. The parameters were: They could only build with materials found in a bag of provided materials, the craft had to fit on a pneumatic launcher and it had to land in the “flight zone.” Crafts would then be awarded points for both distance and weight in a combined total.
The first day was designated for building and testing. The second day included a talk on aeronautic principles from Boeing Aeronautics engineer Brittany Richardson, who later provided advice to individual students in their second attempt at building a craft. The third day was dedicated to testing the second set of designs. The final competition took place on the fourth day in front of the school assembly.
