Local Athletes Shine in Prelims, Qualify for Finals

Athletes from Polytechnic, Mayfield Senior, Maranatha High School, Flintridge Sacred Heart and St. Francis turned in solid performances in the CIF Southern Section preliminaries last week and qualified for the championship finals.
Three Panthers will move on to this weekend’s Division 4 finals. Xian Shively placed second in the 3,200-meter run with a time of 9 minutes, 39.81 seconds and fourth in the 1,600 with a time of 4:18.80 to qualify.
Jack Babcock made the cut after finishing the 110-meter hurdles in 16.31 seconds and Zoey Mao punched her ticket to finals after clearing five feet in the high jump event.
Three Cubs also qualified for the Division 4 finals after posting top-three finishes in their respective events.
Audrey Suarez won the 800-meter run posting a time of 2:14.63 and placed second in the 1,600 with a time of 5:03.72. Teammate Sidney Hendricks ran the 3,200-meter run and finished in 11 minutes, 25.15 seconds for third place. Mia Koga also qualified for finals after clearing 9 feet, 6 inches in the pole vault event.
Maranatha athletes qualified for the Division 4 finals in six events and were led by the Fong brothers.
Brendan Fong posted a time of 49.78 seconds to place second in the 400-meter dash and placed third in the 200-meter dash with a time of 22.28. He grouped up with Eli Rodarte, Henry Witherspoon and Keaton Strawn for the 4×100-meter relay, in which they placed ninth with a time of 44.33 seconds. The quartet also competed in the 4×400 relay and placed third with a time of 3:28.05.
Justin Fong ran the 100-meter dash and finished in 10.98 for seventh place and competed in the 200, in which he placed eighth after posting a time of 22.45.
Ryan Green is the lone athlete from the Maranatha girls’ squad to move on to finals after placing sixth in the 100-meter dash with a time of 12.24 seconds.
Lauren Bolte will be representing Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy after placing ninth in the 400-meter dash (59.86 seconds) in the Division 4 prelims.
Three Golden Knights will be competing in the Division 3 finals this weekend after solid performances in the prelims.
Matthew Molina won the 110-meter hurdles race with a time of 14.65 and placed second in the high jump by clearing 6 feet, 2 inches.
Teammate Blake Howard will also move on the finals competition after placing fifth in the pole vault event by clearing 12 feet, 9 inches.
Andrew Monarrez will join his teammates after placing ninth in the long jump (20-09.00).
All qualified athletes will travel to Torrance to compete in the CIF-SS Track and Field Championship Finals at El Camino College this weekend.
