Three Falcons Earn All-CIF Honors

San Diego State-bound pitcher Dee Dee Hernandez earned a spot on the All-CIF Division 1 first team after helping the Falcons clinch a fourth consecutive Pacific League title.

The Crescenta Valley High School athletics department had successful campaigns in a spring season shortened by the COVID-19 pandemic and the CIF Southern Section took notice by including three of the school’s standout athletes in its annual All-CIF lists.

Dee Dee Hernandez, widely regarded as one of the best pitchers in the area, capped her high school softball career with an All-CIF Division 1 first team selection after helping the Falcons claim a fourth consecutive Pacific League championship. The Falcons finished 16-5 on the season and shut out Simi Valley Royal, 5-0, in the first round of the playoffs before falling to Murrieta Mesa, 1-0.

The Burbank High softball team advanced past the first round of the CIF Southern Section Division 5 playoffs without ever setting foot on the diamond. The Bulldogs’ opening opponent, Coast Union, had forfeited due to a lack of players.

So, for all intents and purposes, the Bulldogs’ postseason journey began in the second round by hosting Oxnard Santa Clara.

As it turned out, it was also where that journey came to an end. The Bulldogs were never really able to break through against Saints’ pitcher Mia Guerrero and fell, 7-3, in their CIF-Southern Section Division 5 second round playoff game Saturday afternoon at Maxam Memorial Park.

Despite a complete game effort from junior starting pitcher Daniel Neria, Burbank fell short in their CIF Southern Section Division 5 second-round playoff game at Hemet, losing 4-2 on Tuesday.

The Bulldogs were unable to overcome a three-run home run allowed in the bottom of the first inning, which proved to be the difference in the game.

It was the appointed hour for the tipoff of the Burroughs High girls’ basketball playoff semifinal hosting Cajon High of San Bernardino. The teams were warmed up and ready. However, there were no officials. It seems the CIF had neglected to assign any.

As a set of neutral officials were summoned, the teams casually kept warm before an old-fashioned, schoolyard game of H-O-R-S-E broke out between the two schools’ head coaches.

After a 90-minute delay, the referees arrived and the contest got underway.

Sattwik Banerjee was one of five Burbank players to score in double digits and helped the Bulldogs edge No. 1-seeded Santa Ana Foothill, 79-77, in a thrilling double-overtime CIF-SS Division 3AA quarterfinal on Tuesday.

In his second year as Burbank High School’s head boys’ basketball coach, Sid Cooke has celebrated each major victory with a five-word mantra. He said it when the Bulldogs beat Los Angeles Shalhevet to open the season and again when they rallied from a 10-point deficit in the fourth quarter to beat Crescenta Valley on the road in league play.

So when Burbank upset Santa Ana Foothill, the No. 1 seed in the CIF Southern Section 3AA bracket, 79-73 in a double-overtime thriller on Tuesday, Cooke knew exactly how to describe it.

Burroughs Beats Burbank For 8th Straight Time

Kayla Wrobel scored a team-high 19 points and led the Bears to a 53-25 victory over intracity rival Burbank on Thursday. Burroughs is ranked No. 11 in CIF Southern Section Division IIAA.

There is a truism in basketball: If you don’t put the ball through the hoop, you will struggle to win games. This was clearly demonstrated when Burbank hosted Burroughs in a girls’ basketball clash of intracity rivals.

Burroughs used a suffocating defense against the host Bulldogs that produced a 53-25 victory Thursday evening in the Pacific League finale for both schools.
