Pasadena Conservatory music students are among those in the Eastern Sierra Symphony, whose mission is to enrich the cultural landscape of the Eastern Sierra through transformative orchestral performances and music education.
It is a unique Mammoth Lakes-based symphony, comprised of internationally recognized artists, students — the majority of whom come from the Pasadena Conservatory — and Mammoth locals. The Pasadena students have the rare opportunity to work in a professional environment, sitting side-by-side with professional musicians and performing in the orchestra.
In its 40th year, the recently completed Summer Concert Series reached new heights with Conductor and Artistic Director Edwin Outwater providing a blend of the classics — Barber, Mahler, Schumann and Mozart — along with contemporary pieces that included attending California composer Gabriela Lena Frank’s exciting “Concertino Cusqueno.”
Outwater also shared conducting responsibilities with his mentee, Anna Wittstruck.
Amy Sze, the Horton Kohl soloist, dazzled the audience with Barber’s Concerto for Violin and Orchestra Op. 14. Sze is a Colburn School student studying with ESS Executive Director Aimee Kreston.
Internationally recognized artists Johnathan Johnson (tenor), Diana Newman (soprano) and Hugh Russell (baritone) also traveled across the country to give stellar performances throughout the series.
Pasadena and Mammoth Lakes have long enjoyed a close relationship, with many Pasadenans vacationing in Mammoth. In addition to Pasadena Conservatory Students, local support comes from the Jerry and Terri Kohl Family Foundation, Carolyn and Craig Watson, Aimee Kreston and Andrew Picken, Margaret Sedenquist, Jan Sanders, Timothy Pylko and Diana Peterson-More.
