Local Athletes Selected to All-Pacific League Teams

Though no Glendale-area school brought home any CIF Southern Section championships during the fall, the fact that there was a season was a victory for students, coaches and administrators.
Many athletes participated in high school competition for the first time in two years and managed to remain competitive and overcome the obstacles brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Burbank’s Agazaryan, Gezalyan, Baboudjian Earn All-CIF Honors

Burbank High School’s varsity boys’ water polo team is coming off one of its most significant seasons in school history after finishing as runners-up in the CIF-SS Division V championship game. And it gets better for the Bulldogs as senior Johnny Agazaryan was the CIF Division V Player of the Year.
Junior Zack Gezalyan and senior Hovannes “Hovo” Baboudjian also earned All-CIF first-team honors.

Bulldogs Historic Season Ends With Loss in CIF Final

Burbank High School’s varsity boys’ water polo team, in its most successful season in more than 50 years, lost to top-seeded Carpinteria, 12-9, in the CIF-SS Division V final last Saturday at Irvine’s William Woollett Jr. Aquatics Center.
The Bulldogs capped a marvelous year with a 19-3 overall record after winning the Pacific League title for the first time since 1969, according to Burbank Athletic Director Patrick McMenamin. It was also the first CIF finals appearance by any Burbank High team since the varsity boys’ basketball team in 2017.

Spartans Finish 4th in Rio Hondo League

The La Cañada High School varsity boys’ water polo team’s season recently came to an end, with the Spartans narrowly missing the CIF playoffs.
Under fifth-year head coach Gil Millanes, LCHS finished fourth in the Rio Hondo League with a 3-5 record (9-11 overall).
Despite missing the postseason, La Cañada ended its season on a high note by defeating visiting San Marino 13-12 in a league game on Oct. 27. It was a nice bounce-back performance after LCHS dropped its match at South Pasadena, 18-11, on Oct. 26.
South Pasadena and Temple City each finished with 7-1 league records and shared the league championship.

Bulldogs Win Semifinal; to Play for First CIF Title

After the Burbank High School varsity boys’ water polo team’s narrow 9-8 victory over visiting Ventura Buena in the CIF-SS Division 5 semifinals on Wednesday, head coach David Arakelyan said that it was the Bulldogs “toughest game by far.”
Two clutch goals by Robert Kharazyan in the final minutes of the fourth quarter secured the victory to propel the Pacific League champion Bulldogs to the CIF final.

Nitros Edged by Fullerton, 12-9, in Playoffs

The Glendale High School varsity boys’ water polo team’s postseason ended in the second round of CIF-SS Division 4 playoffs when the Nitros were defeated by host Fullerton, 12-9, on Thursday.
Freshmen Tigran Megroyan and Rudolf Hovhannisyan combined for six goals while senior Arthur Lazaryan, junior Gregory Carrillo and freshman Gevorg Choginyan each scored once.

Bulldogs Pummel Cathedral, Advance to CIF Quarterfinals

After winning the Pacific League for the first time since 1969, Burbank High School’s varsity boys’ water polo team advanced to the CIF-SS Division 5 quarterfinals with an 18-6 victory over visiting Cathedral High of Los Angeles on Thursday.
The Pacific League champion Bulldogs dominated early and built a 10-2 lead in the first half, from which Cathedral could never recover.

Bears Pulverize Pasadena High School, 22-9

The Burroughs High School varsity boys’ water polo team dominated Pasadena, 22-9, on Tuesday to clinch fifth place in the Pacific League.
Xavier Turla scored a team-high nine goals in the blowout victory, helping the Bears end their season on a high note.
“[Xavier] is the best player on our team. He’s been playing for a long time, very passionate about the game,” said Jacob Cook, Burroughs’ head coach. “He takes over during the game and he always does really well, so it wasn’t a surprise to see that performance.”

Nitros Beat Arcadia in Pacific League Third-Place Game

The Glendale High School varsity boys’ water polo team secured third place in the Pacific League Tournament with a narrow 16-14 victory over host Arcadia High on Thursday.
The Nitros finished with a 7-2 league record and are 8-7 overall heading into the CIF playoffs, which begin next week.

Falcons Finish as League’s Runner-Up

The Crescenta Valley High School varsity boys’ water polo team was defeated by Burbank High, 12-5, at Arcadia’s Aquatic Center in the Pacific League championship on Thursday.
The Falcons finished with a 5-3 league record (11-15 overall) and secured a CIF playoff berth. Meanwhile, the Bulldogs finished a perfect 8-0 in league and improved to 19-2 overall.
