Arielle McKenzie helped the LCHS girls’ distance medley relay win its race at the Simi Valley Invitational with a time of 12 minutes, 40.33 seconds.

The La Cañada High School girls’ track team continued its record-setting streak last week at the Simi Valley Invitational while the boys’ squad notched a podium finish and numerous personal records. The meet drew hundreds of athletes from more than 60 schools in Ventura and adjoining counties.
The LCHS girls’ distance medley relay (DMR) opened Thursday’s distance events with a bang by winning the race in 12 minutes, 40.44 seconds, which is a school and meet record. The DMR includes legs of 1,200, 400, 800 and 1,600 meters (one lap is 400 meters), in that order.
Freshman Arielle McKenzie ran leg one, opening a 50-meter lead. Artis Phillips maintained the lead on her one-lap leg. Ellaney Matarese, saving energy for a second race later in the day, cruised the 800 and freshman Katelyn Matarese anchored the 1,600 in a breakout performance, running 5:12 to fight off a challenge from second-place Redondo Union High from Redondo Beach.

The La Cañada High School track and field teams won their season opener against visiting Burbank last week. Arielle McKenzie (from left), Katelyn Matarese, Ellaney Matarese and Kaitlyn Creighton set a new school record in the 4×800 girls’ relay with a winning time of 10 minutes, 20.77 seconds.

The La Cañada High School track and field varsity boys and girls made a triumphant return to Spartan Stadium and defeated Burbank in a nonleague meet last Thursday.
Battling cold weather and gusty winds, the LCHS boys defeated Burbank 69-62, while the girls avenged last year’s defeat with an 85-46 victory.
“Burbank is a large Division 1 school that has won its league the past several years and is the favorite again this year,” said Spartan girls’ head coach Chris Matarese. “Beating a large team like Burbank for a small school like La Cañada is a real accomplishment.”
