Spartan Athletes Reap Benefits of Sports Medicine Doctor

Dr. Alex Weber works with athletic trainer Tina Vasquez as they tend to a La Cañada High School football player who suffered a knee injury during the game against Monrovia on Friday, Oct. 13. Weber, assistant professor of Orthopedic Surgery, Sports Medicine and General Orthopedic Surgery for Keck School of Medicine at USC, works closely with both Spartan athletes and those who play for USC.

Dr. Alex Weber excused himself before heading out toward the 40-yard line, in the direction of the injured Monrovia football player prone on the La Cañada High School field turf.
Weber stood by, allowing the Monrovia training staff to treat the player, who’d sustained a separated shoulder. After a few minutes, the young man was able to stand and walk to the sideline for treatment (as suggested, gently and reasonably, by Weber) while the game resumed. LCHS Sports Medicine Team Takes 2nd Place

La Cañada High School’s star sports medicine students shone again recently, finishing second in the large schools team division at the 17th annual St. Francis High School Regional Sports Medicine Competition.
Thirty-nine young Spartan trainers participated, alongside representatives of 40 schools from Kansas, Washington and California. They all were tested on a variety of sports-medicine related topics, focusing this year on the lower leg, ankle and foot.
Three LCHS students also were awarded individual medals in the Rookie Division, with Nyree Khachikyan taking second place, Abbey Frederich third and Aiden Phillips fourth. Continue reading “LCHS Sports Medicine Team Takes 2nd Place”
