Caltech Scientist to Speak at Trojan Affiliates Meeting Oct. 5

USC Trojan Affiliates, a philanthropic and social women’s group of USC, invites alumni, parents and friends to attend its upcoming meeting on Thursday, Oct. 5, at El Portal Restaurant, 695 E. Green St. in Pasadena. The social reception begins at 6 p.m. with the dinner at 7 p.m., followed by the program and meeting. The evening will feature Vandana Desai, deputy science lead for the NASA/IPAC Infrared Science at Caltech speaking on “Seeing the Universe With Infrared Eyes.”
As deputy science lead at the official archive for NASA’s infrared and submillimeter missions, Desai works to ensure that astronomers have access to the data they need to make new discoveries. As an infrared astronomer, she uses these same data sets to learn about how galaxies form and evolve. Before the archive, she worked at the science center for the Spitzer Space Telescope, one of NASA’s four Great Observatories and an outstanding facility for infrared astronomy. She received her doctorate from the University of Washington in Seattle, and her bachelor’s degree from Caltech, where she met her husband, who is currently a professor of chemical engineering at USC.
Ann Proctor, serving in her first term as Trojan Affiliates president, encourages the community to attend the October meeting to become acquainted with the members of Trojan Affiliates. The members meet five times a year in the San Gabriel Valley and are educated by various USC professors and other well-versed and interesting speakers. Members also donate their time to raise greatly needed funds for scholarships for worthy USC students. The organization awarded 10 scholarships for the 2017-18 academic school year. Volunteer opportunities include selling USC products, volunteering at the Pasadena Showcase House, USC Day of Service and more.
For more information and/or to make a reservation for Oct. 5 at $30 per person, contact Sarah Sismondo by Sept. 29 at (626) 303-7284 or sisarah@verizon.net.
