Jewel City Fun & Fitness Day May 21

The Noon Rotary Club of Glendale will host its fifth annual Jewel City Fun & Fitness Day at the Glendale YMCA Sunday, May 21.
The family-oriented community festival will begin at 7 a.m. with three separate bicycle rides that will depart from the Glendale YMCA: the Jewel City Ride/Tour de YMCA, a 30- to 40-mile circuit around the Verdugo Mountains that will include La Tuna Canyon Road, Chevy Chase Drive and a lap around the Rose Bowl Stadium Recreation Loop; the East Tour de YMCA, a 15-minute bike ride that will pass by Brand Park and the Burbank Community YMCA; and the 30-mile Verdugo Gravel Adventure that will travel over climbing mixed terrain into the Verdugo Mountains via the Stough Canyon Nature Center, the Tree of Life and Cherry Canyon (CX or mountain bikes are recommended for the mixed terrain ride). The $35 registration fee for each of the bike rides will include a special souvenir, raffle ticket and lunch.
The free Family Fun Ride for bicyclists ages 7 and older will depart from the Glendale YMCA at 9 a.m. with a police escort through downtown Glendale. The free Glendale Family Fest from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Glendale YMCA will include games and activities that promote a healthy lifestyle as well as live music, rock climbing wall, free yoga and Zumba, health and fitness demonstrations and more. Food will be available for purchase at the Family Fest.
Event proceeds will benefit Glendale YMCA, Homenetmen Glendale and Glendale Adventist Medical Missions.

Descanso Appoints New Executive Director

Juliann Rooke, chief operating officer at Descanso Gardens, has been selected to be the new executive director of the La Cañada Flintridge botanic garden. The announcement was made Tuesday by Amy Lamb, chair of the Descanso Gardens Guild board of trustees. Rooke will step into the position on Sept. 1, following the retirement of current Executive Director David Brown on Aug. 31.

Engineer, architect, artist, beloved husband and father and proud American.
Guglielmo D. Dadomo, known fondly as “Bill,” was born and grew up in Santa Stefano, Italy.
After serving in the Italian military, he immigrated to the United States. He served in the United States Army and proudly became a United States citizen in 1961. Living in Chicago, Bill worked for a large architectural design and engineering firm. He designed the International Business Building on the Notre Dame Campus and part of the Sears Tower.

Project Scientist Founder Wins Women of Influence Award

Project Scientist Founder Sandy Marshall is the 2017 winner of the Orange County Women of Influence President’s Award sponsored by the Connected Women of Influence. The President’s Award recognizes a woman CEO, president or owner who has demonstrated success, growth and achievement in her business enterprise.
Marshall was chosen from nine finalists who were acknowledged at the awards luncheon held at the Radisson Hotel in Newport Beach. The finalists received a certificate of recognition by state Sen. John M. W. Moorlach.
“It’s such an honor and privilege to receive this award,” said Marshall. “Our mission at Project Scientist is to educate, coach and advocate for girls with an aptitude, talent and passion for science, technology, engineering and math. We hope to dispel the stereotypes around girls in STEM and winning this award gives us another platform to inspire girls to become women of influence in fields that are predominantly male dominated.”
While funding national STEM initiatives through the NASCAR Foundation (that Marshall also founded), she learned of the disadvantages that girls and women have in STEM majors and careers, and became committed to doing what she could to make a difference. As a mother of two young girls with a passion for science, Marshall remains committed to changing the status quo for her girls as well as girls across the country.
