The CIF Southern Section released its All-CIF winter selections last week, recognizing athletes from La Cañada High School and Flintridge Prep.

With only two seniors graduating from last year’s third-place squad, Monrovia entered this season as the La Cañada High School varsity softball team’s biggest challenge in the Rio Hondo League.

The La Cañada High School varsity baseball team edged visiting Glendale, 4-3, in a nonleague game last Friday.

The La Cañada High School varsity boys’ soccer team has been taken to the limit twice the past two weeks and its wear showed at Mendota on Tuesday. The Spartans were unable to keep up with the No. 1-seeded Aztecs and fell, 4-0, in the first round of the CIF State Division V Southern California Regional. The Flintridge Prep varsity girls’ basketball team looked well on its way toward another semifinal with a double-digit lead over visiting La Salle in the CIF-Southern Section Division 3A quarterfinals last week, but Julia Macabuhay scored 27 points in the second half to rally her team past the No. 2-seeded Rebels, 68-61. The La Cañada High School varsity boys’ soccer team found itself in a familiar situation on Tuesday. For a second consecutive match, the No. 8-seeded Spartans were involved a penalty kick shootout, but the outcome didn’t favor them in the CIF-Southern Section Division 6 semifinals. The Governing Board agreed at its meeting on Wednesday, Feb. 15, to license the La Cañada High School football field — where the turf was replaced last summer as part of a $1.3-million upgrade — to the soccer club already associated with the lease.
