The Pinto 8 La Cañada Flintridge Spartans delivered the perfect Father’s Day gift last weekend by winning the Pony 2 District championship last Sunday.
The local squad overcame a five-run deficit and defeated West Covina, 21-11, to win the title. The Spartans downed Charter Oak, 17-10, in extra innings and Pasadena, 19-9, to advance to the championship game.
The Spartans had several contributors on offense, especially from the No. 2, 3 and 4 hitters. Chase Regan, Nick Pieper and Finn Flower-Hogan knocked in a combined 27 runs over three games, and Benji Geller scored 10 of those runs from the leadoff spot. Donovan Udell and Jack Harlan each had two multi-hit games, Skyler Henry drove in a run in the championship game and made a good play on the field, Taylor Parrille and Scotty Burns contributed on offense and defense. Will Park and Trevor Rivas were solid on offense and on the mound, and Fritz Phillips, who started all three games, baffled opposing hitters. Scorekeeper Jerry Regan was also essential to the team.
The team earned a break this weekend and will compete in the Regionals next week.
