The San Marino High School varsity boys’ basketball team suffered its second Rio Hondo League loss of the season last Friday, falling to host La Cañada, 62-41.
Jadyn Torres hit a turnaround jumper midway through the first quarter to give San Marino a 5-3 lead over the home squad, but Spartan guard Justin Kouyoumdjian iced the Titans’ offense by drilling four consecutive shots from beyond the arc, giving La Cañada a 10-point cushion late in the first quarter. Trailing by 11 midway through the second quarter, San Marino showed signs of life with a 3-pointer from Jimmy Fuerst that cut the deficit to 24-16 with 3:52 remaining. Unfortunately for the Titans, it would also be their final field goal of the first half. San Marino did not make another bucket until the 4:58 mark of the third quarter when the game was out of reach.
Andrew Quach led the Titans with 13 points, and Torres added 10 points. Owen Koch chipped in eight points, Fuerst netted four, and Joshua Chang, Chuma Azinge and Lienard Hwang contributed two points each.
San Marino (10-10 overall record, 2-2 in league) competed in the Southern California Shootout at Azusa Pacific University and fell to Glendora, 66-62.
The Titans will look to bounce back in Rio Hondo League play this week. They hosted Monrovia on Wednesday and take on visiting La Cañada this Friday, Jan. 27, at 7 p.m.
San Marino 64
South Pasadena 54
The Titans scored an important Rio Hondo League victory last week, defeating host South Pasadena, 64-54.
“Tonight was a gritty collective effort by our guys,” SMHS head coach Mihail Papadopulos said in an email. “We felt confident knowing what we were going to expect from South Pas. They hound you all game long, either in the half court or full court, and ideally want opponents to get discombobulated. At the end of the day, in league, every game has challenges, and we just have to be up for the fight, weather storms and have to figure out how to score one more point than our opponent. I’m glad to see our bench step up today.”
Michael Shahan led San Marino with 18 points and seven rebounds, and Chuma Azinge added 13 points and four rebounds. Jadyn Torres finished with nine points and 11 rebounds, Owen Koch and Johnny Dang netted eight points each, Zach Spaulding had six opints, and Josh Chang and Jimmy Fuerst contributed one point.
