‘Octopus Challenge’ to Screen at Caltech March 24

“The Octopus Challenge,” a high-definition documentary, will be presented on Saturday, March 24, at 4 p.m. in Caltech’s Beckman Auditorium. This program is part of Caltech’s Science Saturdays series.
“The Octopus Challenge” is a high-definition movie that explores the abilities of octopi. The octopus is a remarkable creature. The amusing and insightful program shows the octopus in action, squeezing into tiny spaces, sniffing out hidden food and even opening doors.
Justin Rolando, a Caltech Ph.D. student in chemistry and chemical engineering, will introduce the film and guide the post-screening discussion.

‘Power of the Planet: Ice’ at Caltech March 17

The Astronomer’s Dream will be presented on Saturday, March 17, at 4 p.m. in Caltech’s Beckman Auditorium. This program is part of Caltech’s Science Saturdays series.
Ice may be nothing more than frozen water, but it holds extraordinary power. Descending deep down a frozen waterfall, this program looks at a glacier in action from below and discovers the huge Jacobshaven glacier is retreating, how it shaped our past and why it may now threaten our future. This is a BBC/National Geographic Channel US/ZDF co-production. Recommended for all ages.
Alex Robel, a Caltech Geological and Planetary Sciences NOAA Postdoctoral Scholar, will introduce the film and guide the post-screening discussion.

‘Challenges of Life’ Presented at Caltech

“Life: Challenges of Life” will be presented on Saturday, Jan. 27, at 4 p.m. in Caltech’s Beckman Auditorium. This program is part of Caltech’s Science Saturdays series.
The film introduces the extraordinary things animals and plants must do in order to survive and reproduce. Featured will be brown-tufted capuchins, dolphins, cheetahs, chameleons and killer whales.
Christopher Spalding, a doctoral student in geological and planetary sciences at Caltech, will introduce the film and guide the post-screening discussion.
Recommended for ages 8 and up.

Adonis Puentes and the Voice of Cuba Orchestra Perform at Caltech

Adonis Puentes and the Voice of Cuba Orchestra will perform on Saturday, Jan. 20, at 8 p.m. in Caltech’s Beckman Auditorium.
Fronting an all-Cuban acoustic orchestra, Puente’s vocals are surrounded by guitar, piano, bass, trumpet and percussion. Puentes opens up the world of Cuban music to his audiences when they hear his rich voice, accompanied by the other players’ tight, multilayered arrangements.

‘Astronomer’s Dream’ Presented at Caltech

This film is a journey through a computer graphic visualization of space, based on data obtained by NASA satellites.
Anna Ho, a Caltech planetary astronomy graduate student, will introduce the film and guide the post-screening discussion.

“Planet Earth: Caves” will be presented on Saturday, April 1, at 4 p.m. in Caltech’s Beckman Auditorium. This program is part of Caltech’s Science Saturdays series.
The film, which is recommended for ages 8 and older, ventures into the underground world of perpetual darkness and the unknown while exploring caves, tunnels and caverns. The shadowy interiors of these natural structures are a breeding ground for bizarre and remarkable wildlife.
Erika Hamden, a postdoctoral scholar in astronomy at Caltech, will introduce the film and guide the post-screening discussion.
