After hearing that students at La Cañada High School are getting more sleep this school year, Governing Board members voted unanimously Tuesday to recommend that the school bring back its “late start” bell schedule next fall.
For 2017-18, La Cañada Unified School District became one of the first districts in the state to start the school day at its high school at 8:30 a.m. (later than the previous 7:45 a.m. start). The initiative was inspired by the Challenge Success program, which is focused on improving students’ overall well-being.
A series of surveys were conducted and an oversight committee composed of students, parents, faculty and administrators met four times to evaluate the later start, said Jim Cartnal, executive director of pupil and personnel programs and services. It was a busy year in La Cañada Flintridge. Residents came together to mourn losses and celebrate victories, they made their voices heard at the polls and in public hearings, they made history in real estate and sports, and, at La Cañada High School, students were instructed to try to get a little more sleep.

1. LCF Loses Dave Spence
Dave Spence suffered a fatal heart attack at his home May 16. The devoted city councilman and six-time mayor was 80.
In March, he’d been re-elected for a seventh term as a member of the City Council, on which he’d served since 1992: “In my opinion, La Cañada Flintridge is one of the greatest cities in this state,” Spence said during his last campaign.
La Cañada Unified School District’s superintendent Wendy Sinnette wants to see a district-wide implementation of Challenge Success to educate the community on the upcoming bond measure election, to reorganize the district’s administration and to focus on math instruction.

At a special meeting Tuesday, the La Cañada Unified School District Governing Board voted unanimously to start the school day at 8:30 a.m. for the 2017-18 school year, a departure from the current 7:45 a.m. first-period start time. The school day will end at 3:14 p.m. on Mondays, Tuesdays and Fridays and at 3:13 p.m. during Wednesday and Thursday block schedules. The La Cañada Unified School District Governing Board will decide next week whether to set a schedule so that every school day is like Tuesday on the La Cañada High School and LCHS 7/8 campus.
Tuesday — when first period begins at 8:40 a.m. rather than the typical 7:45 a.m. start time — is the happiest, most productive day of the week, according to the testimony of multiple students and teachers advocating for a later start every day. Name another high school that can pool an Oscar winner, head of Plastic Surgery at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles, CEO of Warner Bros. Entertainment, creative executive at Walt Disney Imagineering, state Senator, former Major League Baseball player, NASA engineer, deputy district attorney, pilot and philharmonic oboist and have them all on the same campus, on the same morning.
For at least the next two years, the Los Angeles Premier Futbol Club will continue to call La Cañada High School home.
The Governing Board agreed at its meeting on Wednesday, Feb. 15, to license the La Cañada High School football field — where the turf was replaced last summer as part of a $1.3-million upgrade — to the soccer club already associated with the lease. Standing before a full La Cañada High School auditorium, Denise Pope asked the parents and teachers to take 20 seconds and write on a piece of paper how they define “success.”
One said happiness. Another said freedom. One said “the ability to sleep at night” and, of course, there was one man who facetiously said “Ferrari,” which elicited laughter.
Pope, a Stanford University researcher, said that in her experience, too many students seriously give the Ferrari answer, equating success with money. She said she believes this is rooted in overvaluing quantitative measures of success and leaving the development of adolescents to the sidelines.

La Cañada Unified School District officials hope an overnight trip to Stanford University will lead to a lasting change in their school community’s culture.
A small contingent of educators, administrators, teachers, parents and students from La Cañada High School and LCHS 7/8 traveled to Stanford last weekend to talk about student stress.
Attending along with similarly high-achieving districts from across the United States, LCUSD was selected to be part of at the 13th Challenge Success conference, which, yes, asked its guests to challenge the typical notion of success.
