New Mayor Talks Goals, Shows Off New City Hall

During Tuesday’s City Council meeting new Mayor Terry Walker (right) told outgoing Mayor Michael Davitt that she has “big shoes to fill” in the coming year, using footwear as props to illustrate that point.

Terry Walker has substantial goals that she’d like to accomplish — and big shoes to fill, she said — in the next year, her first as mayor of La Cañada Flintridge.
She demonstrated Tuesday by holding aloft a loafer belonging to Michael Davitt, LCF’s outgoing mayor, and then inserting one of her high-heeled shoes within it: “This your shoe, and this is my shoe,” she said, as Davitt sat beside her, chuckling. “I will try to live up to your shoe size.”
After Walker’s first meeting as mayor adjourned, show-and-tell continued at the “changeover” reception as community members filled the hallways and lobby of the former Sport Chalet corporate office building that soon will contain City Hall. Target’s Arrival Stoking Range of Reactions

Opening Day is almost a year away, but the community of La Cañada Flintridge is abuzz — cheering and worrying — about the Target that’s going to set up shop in the Town Center.
News broke last week that the nation’s second-largest general merchandise retailer signed to open in the former Sport Chalet space next July. When asked, local shoppers have had no problem identifying what it is they’d purchase: pajamas, pet supplies, toothpaste, clothes, books, DVDs, school supplies, makeup, underwear.
“I go to Target all the time in Eagle Rock or Pasadena,” said Darlene Underwood, who already visits the Town Center regularly to have coffee and a bite with her friends Marlene Rust and Mary Anderson. “This will be just more convenient.”

New Town Center Tenant Right on Target

La Cañada Flintridge is getting a Target.
The national retailer announced Wednesday that it has signed a lease to move into the former Sport Chalet space, with plans to open in July 2018.
The popular discount store will operate a 45,865-square foot “small-format” store in the La Cañada Flintridge Town Center. This Target will be the 10th of its kind in the Los Angeles area. It will operate next door to the new City Hall, which also is scheduled to open next year, occupying the former Sport Chalet corporate office space.
“I am delighted; it’s going to be great for our community,” said Pat Anderson, CEO of the LCF Chamber of Commerce.
Target began discussions with the IDS Real Estate Group, which owns the Town Center, last November, according to Rob Fuelling, IDS’ senior vice president.

The Town Center will have a new anchor retailer when a small-format Target opens in the former Sport Chalet store in July 2018.

City Picks Architect to Remodel New City Hall Building

Gonzalez Goodale Architects will remodel the former Sport Chalet corporate headquarters into La Cañada Flintridge’s new City Hall..

The City Council voted 4-0 at its meeting Tuesday to award Gonzalez Goodale Architects with the contract to renovate the new City Hall building, agreeing to a fee of no more than $505,000.
The architects will be tasked with turning the former Sport Chalet corporate headquarters office building — for which the city is paying $11.23 million — building into a workable City Hall. City Councilman Jonathan Curtis was not at Tuesday’s meeting, but his fellow council members gave the contract the go-ahead when they approved the consent agenda. LCF Defines Budget; Reserves to Slip in 2017-18

If the 2017-18 budget proposed Tuesday is approved in July, the city will allocate an additional $40,000 toward assigned sheriff’s patrols and see its financial reserves drop below 100% of operating expenses and revenue totals for the first time in years.
In the first of three or four planned budget meetings this year, council members reviewed the city’s financials: In the upcoming fiscal year, LCF expects to bring in a total of $13.863 million and to have $13.118 million in expenses, leaving a balance of $745,550 for council consideration items. Outlook Wins 10 Journalism Awards in Statewide Contest

La Cañada Flintridge Outlook newspaper claimed four awards and the Outlook Newspaper group won a total of 10 in the statewide journalism contest conducted by the California Newspaper Publishers Association, it was announced last weekend in Santa Monica.

Former Sport Chalet Reaching New Tenant Deal, But Not With Hooters

No, the former Sport Chalet space will not be occupied by a Hooters Restaurant, despite what you might have read on social media.
It also won’t house a skating rink, said Robert Fuelling, senior vice president of IDS Real Estate Group, which owns the Town Center.
IDS is, in fact, closing in on a deal with a tenant for the 45,000-square foot retail space, Fuelling said, adding only that the negotiations are with a national retailer and that an announcement could come within a month. City Hall’s $11 Million Move to Town Center OK’d

La Cañada Flintridge’s City Hall is moving to the Town Center, a “more strategic location,” Mayor Jonathan Curtis called it.
The city announced last week that it agreed to purchase the former Sport Chalet office building for $11.23 million. The purchase follows a recommendation by an ad hoc committee comprised of citizens, Realtors, city staff and consultants, as well as the completion of a 90-day due diligence that analyzed physical, legal, environmental and suitability factors.
LCF will pay La Cañada Properties Inc. a cash deposit into escrow of $5.65 million with the balance carried on a two-year, interest-free promissory note that will allow the city to consider various alternatives for paying off the balance without incurring additional costs or charges. Those alternatives will include options for the sale or lease of the current City Hall building at 1327 Foothill Blvd.
