Community Women Vital Voices, in association with E-Central Credit Union, recently hosted a reception to recognize Gerald Freeny, the 2019 Tournament of Roses president and first African American to serve in that role in the tournament’s 123-year history.
Pasadena Mayor Terry Tornek, Vice Mayor John J. Kennedy, City Councilman Andy Wilson, Congresswomen Maxine Waters and Judy Chu, state Sen. Steve Bradford, and state Assemblymen Chris Holden, Mike Gibson and Reggio Jones Sawyer were among leaders who honored Freeny at E-Central’s Pasadena headquarters. More than 300 attendees enjoyed food, jazz played by Nolan Shaheed Quintet and a performance by Pasadena Symphony violinists.
Freeny’s wife, Trina, accepted a special award from Mark A. Garmus, chairman of E-Central’s board. She also received congressional certificates, California State and Assembly proclamations and many other accolades on behalf of her husband, who did not attend the event because of illness.
“E-Central was delighted to partner with Community Women Vital Voices in honoring Mr. Freeny for his many years of service and volunteerism,” said Michael Theodore, E-Central president and CEO. The event was chaired by Ron Carter and Lena Kennedy, with community co-hosts.
