Local Teams Affected by CIF’s New Fall Playoff Divisions

The CIF Southern Section recently updated its football, girls’ volleyball, boys’ water polo and girls’ tennis playoff divisions, and teams from Flintridge Prep, Polytechnic, Maranatha, La Salle and Mayfield senior were affected by the new placements.
The local football programs didn’t see much change. Polytechnic remained in Division 10 and Maranatha will stay in Division 9 this season. The St. Francis football team also enters the upcoming season with no changes and will compete in Division 3 as the fourth highest-rated team with 411.21 points. La Salle, which plays against the Golden Knights in the Angelus League, was bumped up and will now compete in Division 8 after going 7-5 last season.
Three local girls’ volleyball programs will be competing in different divisions this fall. Westridge was moved up to Division 3 after an impressive campaign last year. The Tigers won the Prep League championship and reached the CIF-SS Division 4 semifinals.
The Mayfield Senior and Polytechnic volleyball teams were moved down to Division 4. The Panthers competed in Division 3 last fall and the Cubs were slotted two divisions higher last year.
The Flintridge Prep and Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy volleyball programs won’t see any changes this coming year. The Rebels remain in Division 6, and the Tologs will continue to play in Division 1. Maranatha and La Salle also saw no changes and will remain in Division 5 and Division 3, respectively.
Poly’s water polo program was bumped up to Division 6 this fall, Flintridge Prep moved down from Division 4 to Division 5 this season and St. Francis was placed in Division 6. La Salle’s squad will remain in Division 7.
The Flintridge Prep varsity girls’ tennis squad moved up to Division 3 this year after finishing third in the Prep League with a 6-4 record. The Rebels are now in the same division as Mayfield Senior and rival Polytechnic, which competed in Division 3 last year.
The Maranatha varsity girls’ tennis team was moved down to Division 5, Flintridge Sacred Heart and Westridge’s tennis programs remain in Division 4 and the Lancers stayed in Division 5.
CIF-SS changed its playoff format last year for most sports and no longer ties leagues to a specific division. With competitive equity playoffs, CIF evaluates each team’s performances the past two seasons and places each squad in an appropriate division.
