On Sunday, Nov. 5, breast cancer patient Kaye McDonald will walk beside 10,000 supporters — fellow cancer patients, survivors, physicians, nurses, family and friends — to help raise funds and awareness for women’s cancers at City of Hope’s annual Walk for Hope. The event helps City of Hope researchers and scientists create new cancer treatments that benefit women everywhere.
McDonald was diagnosed with metastatic breast cancer at just 28 years old. She underwent a bilateral mastectomy with reconstruction surgery two years ago, but because her cancer had spread to other parts of her body, she will be in treatment for the rest of her life — but she is hopeful for the future.
“Walk for Hope has the power to fuel life-saving discoveries for women fighting cancer,” said McDonald. “Having City of Hope at my side makes me feel more confident about the treatment I receive and I know my team is working tirelessly to develop breakthrough treatments for all patients like me.”
The annual event, presented by Staples, is a 5K/2K walk through the heart of City of Hope’s campus. It is unique in that it’s held in the same location where breakthrough research is conducted and where life-saving treatment is delivered. A highlight of the walk is the opportunity to wave, cheer and salute cancer patients watching from the windows at City of Hope Helford Clinical Research Hospital.
The Walk for Hope campaign has raised more than $39 million over the years for City of Hope’s Women’s Cancers Program — benefiting research, treatment and education programs for all cancers affecting women.
“We are very grateful for the funding we have received throughout the years from Walk for Hope,” said Dr. Joanne Mortimer, director of City of Hope’s Women’s Cancers Program. “This generous support enables us to provide a continuum of care and conduct innovative research to provide effective interventions for women with breast and gynecological cancers, and prevention of disease among women at risk.”
City of Hope physicians and scientists currently are developing new ways of identifying which breast cancer patients might respond better to specific treatments, creating treatments with fewer and milder side effects, creating medicines that more precisely target women’s cancers, investigating disparities in cancer incidence among Latina women and examining the ways women can reduce their risk of cancer.
For the first time, Walk for Hope has a chair, Cathay Bank Executive Chairman Dunson K. Cheng. Cheng is leading the effort to grow the walk both in size and revenue production — and is helping to raise greater awareness of City of Hope’s Women’s Cancers Program.
“Cathay Bank has been a longtime supporter of the Los Angeles Walk for Hope because City of Hope saves lives,” Cheng said. “As someone who has witnessed the incredible expertise and compassion with which City of Hope treats its patients, I am honored to be the inaugural Los Angeles Walk for Hope chair. We encourage everyone to support this amazing campaign and continue the fight for a cure.”
Event-day festivities begin at 8 a.m., opening ceremony begins at 9:45 a.m. and the Walk begins at 10 a.m. The event will feature an expo area — with a sign-decorating booth with Staples — a live music performance, a special ceremony with a survivors’ moment, giveaways and food trucks.
This year’s Survivors Pavilion is sponsored by Behr. Other sponsors include Wells Fargo, GLANCDA, Technical Event Parters and Mad Engine.
Online registration closes on Saturday, Nov. 4. To register for Walk for Hope Los Angeles or to donate, visit www.walk4hope.org.
