Advocates for the Alzheimer’s Association will speak to the USC Trojan Affiliates on March 1, sharing a personal story of two former Pasadena-area residents who have experienced the ravaging effects of the disease.
Ray Wells, 57, was diagnosed with Young Onset Alzheimer’s at the age of 55. As a parent of two, ages 21 and 17, he had been a Realtor in the Greater Pasadena community for nearly 30 years. Much of his career was spent mentoring and training new recruits as a manager for Dilbeck Realtors and later, Teles Properties. He served as the 1997 president of the Pasadena-Foothills Association of Realtors, as an officer for the California Association of Realtors and as the long-time Master of Ceremonies and leader of the weekly “pitch” meetings, and as the annual Master of Ceremonies for the awards banquet at the Langham Hotel. He and his wife, May, a fellow Realtor, formed a dynamic and successful real estate team.
His life was also filled with being a great dad, participating in all his children’s activities, serving on various boards and as San Marino Tennis Board President.
His esteemed career came to a screeching halt in February of 2016, when he was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s. No longer able to drive, solve simple math problems or handle routine computer and smartphone applications, he was forced to stop working.
Since Ray’s diagnosis two years ago, he and May have become advocates for the Alzheimer’s Association. He threw out the first pitch at the Dodger’s game last year at Alzheimer’s night and joined Maria Shriver on the TD Jakes Show in an effort to increase awareness for the disease. They have raised a total of $45,000 in the Walk to End Alzheimer’s in 2016 and 2017 and are doing everything in their power to contribute to finding a cure, a treatment or prevention to this
insidious disease.
