Polytechnic Downs Flintridge Prep; Maranatha, La Salle Pick Up League Wins

The rivalry game between Flintridge Prep and Polytechnic was close early on, but Panthers Franco Alonso, Robby Wilson, Trent Steele and Jason Mayo broke the game open and led their squad to a 15-7 victory in a Prep League contest at the Glendale Sports Complex last Friday.
Franco blasted a home run and a double, scored five runs, had three runs batted in and stole two bases. Wilson finished with two hits, including a double, and three RBIs, Steele belted two doubles, drove in two runs and scored three times, and Mayo collected four hits, scored three runs and stole three bases.
The Rebels fell behind early by one run and couldn’t muster a comeback. The Rebels were held scoreless in the fifth and sixth innings, which helped to solidify the game for the Panthers.
Both teams also had multiple errors, most notably Flintridge Prep. The Rebels finished with nine errors, and Poly tallied seven.
The Panthers made good use of bunting to advance runners. One such bunt was from sophomore Thibeaux Hirsh, who drove in a run. Prep Junior Matt Son also attempted a sacrifice bunt but came up just short of first base.
Junior Van Fichtner surrendered seven runs and struck out three and was relieved by David Mathias in the fourth inning. He struck out six and didn’t allow any hits. Sam Howell also pitched and struck out one.
As for Prep, juniors Ben Grable, Germaine Harvey, and Max Gitlin as well senior Max Rosenfeld had some big plays. Grable hit two solo home runs, both going deep into right field between a pair of trees. Harvey belted a three-run home run, Rosenfeld collected two singles and Gitlin recorded an RBI single.
On the mound, senior pitcher Thomas Kosakowski surrendered four earned runs on four walks and struck out four. Sophomore Brad Marelich and freshman Spencer Seid came in as relief and recorded two strikeouts each.
Flintridge Prep (9-5 overall record, 3-1 in league) will be idle until March 30.
Poly (5-2 overall, 2-0 in league) will host Burbank Providence in a Prep League game this Friday, March 22, at 3:30 p.m.

Maranatha 6
Cerritos Valley Christian 3

The Minutemen erased a one-run deficit and scored five runs over two frames and held on for a 6-3 victory over visiting Cerritos Valley Christian last Friday.
Maranatha (5-3 overall) improved to 4-0 in Olympic League play and will travel to Sun Valley to take on Village Christian in a league contest at 3:30 p.m.

La Salle 14
Los Angeles Cathedral 3

The Lancers bounced back in Del Rey League play by cruising to a 14-3 victory over visiting Los Angeles Cathedral last Friday.
La Salle (8-3 overall) improved to 3-1 in league play and will host Cerritos in a nonleague doubleheader this Friday, March 22, at 4 p.m.

St. Francis 7
Sherman Oaks Notre Dame 6

The Golden Knights picked up a big Mission League victory last Friday and defeating one of the best teams in the state in Sherman Oaks Notre Dame, 7-6, at the Glendale Sports Complex last Friday.
Tommy Italia led the offense going 2-for-3 with a double, and three RBIs, and Doyle Kane was 2-for-3 with a double, two RBIs and a run scored. Jack Clougherty collected two singles, scored twice and drove in a run, Matthew Odom finished with a single, a run and an RBI, Bradyn Muro scored a run and Stephen Castro singled.
Ryan Rizzo picked up the win as a reliever, surrendering only one hit in 1 1/3 innings of work.
St. Francis (8-8 overall, 2-4 in league) will travel to Encino to take on Crespi in a league game on Tuesday, March 26, at 3:30 p.m.
