Residents Feel the Joy at Villa Gardens

First published in the Oct. 21 print issue of the Pasadena Outlook. Content provided by Villa Gardens.

For months, many Villa Gardens residents would open their laptops or prop their phones or tablets against a coffee cup in their kitchens and enjoy virtual exercise or art classes.
Or, they would sit in their doorways and do crossword puzzles with friends across the hall.
But now, things are getting back to normal … at least a new normal.
With safety precautions in place, residents are getting back to in-person exercise classes, lectures, concerts and birthday parties that routinely occupied their days before the pandemic. Now, after more than 18 months, the fully-vaccinated are finding their way back to traditional social opportunities.
Very high vaccination rates among residents has been key to returning to a life at Villa that is more engaging.
“Villa is definitely returning to its vibrant self,” said Executive Director Paula Digerness. “For many, there is a renewed sense of joy here.”
During the height of the pandemic, when most activities were virtual, Villa took the opportunity to refurbish its outdoor pool and expand seating areas. Residents are now back swimming during the warm autumn months Southern California is known for. They can also welcome vaccinated visitors to their homes, enjoy happy hour and dine together in the Villa’s craftsman-inspired dining room.
With more than 80 years in the community, Villa has built upon its culture of life-long learning, initiated by its founders, retired teachers. That culture still exists with resident-hosted classes such as recent presentations by resident authors, as well as excursions to the best Pasadena has to offer, including day trips to local cultural venues like theater, concerts, movies, museums and local gardens.
As a continuing care retirement community, Villa offers four levels of care — independent living, Truly Yours assisted living, memory care, and skilled nursing and rehab — all on one campus.
“It’s been a tough year and a half, but everyone is really pleased to see the light,” Paula said. “It’s all very positive and we’re thankful.”
