Mayfield Senior Loses in CIF Playoff Semifinals

First published in the Nov. 4 print issue of the Pasadena Outlook.

Mayfield Senior’s varsity girls’ volleyball team fell to host Chino Hills in four sets, 16-25, 25-23, 24-26, 25-23, as the Cubs were eliminated from the CIF-SS Division 4 semifinals on Oct. 30.
Mayfield, which finished first in the Prep League with a sparkling 11-1 record (30-11 overall), won first league title since head coach Hugo Ayala took over in 2018. The Cubs also advanced to the CIF semifinals for the first time since 2016.
Mayfield kept the sets competitive, backed by junior outside hitter Annelise Rising’s team-high 19 kills and 10 digs.
“Annie’s been our kill leader all year. I think she’s probably been the kill leader in all but one match, so she’s been a big part of our offense, big part of our success,” Ayala said. “When she puts the ball down, it’s down. It’s very hard to play out a ball that she hits.”
Sophomore outside hitter Kayla Bandow recorded 12 kills and a team-high four aces, while senior libero Maddie Kaufman added 22 digs.
“Serving wise, [Bandow] brought us back when we were down,” Ayala said. “When you watch [Kaufman] play defense, you kind of get caught spectating as a coach because she makes some pretty awesome plays.”
Despite the loss, Mayfield has likely secured a berth in the CIF State Tournament, which begins on Tuesday, Nov. 9.
