A Rosy Welcome in the Arroyo

Visitors to the Rose Bowl will now receive a visual welcome before they reach the stadium as new signage was unveiled at the campus’ entryway earlier this month.
With several dignitaries gathered in the afternoon sun, the concrete sign sitting atop an aesthetically appropriate Arroyo stone foundation and featuring maroon lettering made its first public appearance. Wescom Credit Union, the official financial institution of the Rose Bowl, was responsible for the gift and its company name garnered prominent placement in front of the sign as a result.
“We’re excited about this partnership,” said Wescom President and CEO Darren Williams. “I can’t help but think about what our 13 founding board members, who started the credit union in 1934, would think if they could see the presence we now have. I know they would be proud of the fact that the credit union has continued its longstanding commitment and their intent that we support the communities in which we serve our members.”
The creation of the Rose Bowl Drive sign was part of the stadium’s Parkway Entrance project, and the road leading north from Seco Street toward Gate A was renamed Wescom Way. KTLA 5 meteorologist and sportscaster Henry DiCarlo emceed the short outdoor ceremony, which featured speeches from Williams, Pasadena City Councilwoman Margaret McAustin, IMG College Los Angeles General Manager Paul Engl and Rose Bowl CEO/General Manager Darryl Dunn.
“We realize it’s not often that you get to associate yourself with special people and a special company, and that’s where we are today,” said Dunn. “It’s always a bit of a challenge. People say ‘How do we get to the front of the Rose Bowl?’ and we try to explain ‘Well, there’s that median island and there’s two streets and they go parallel to each other.’ Now, it’s just two things. Now, we just say there’s Wescom Way and there’s a great sign right at the front door of our stadium.”
The Pasadena City Council approved the Parkway Entrance project in 2013. Other aspects of the undertaking include the Rose Plaza with donor brick opportunities, environmental bioswales and a bench dedicated to the 1983 Army-Navy football game played at the stadium.
McAustin presented Williams with a certificate from the California Assembly in recognition of Wescom’s commitment to the economic prosperity of the local community. Williams also accepted a similar token of appreciation that Pasadena Mayor Terry Tornek had delivered to the event, one that expressed gratitude for Wescom’s relationship with the Rose Bowl and its Legacy Foundation.
“It gives us a lot of pride to know that visitors to America’s stadium are going to be welcomed in such wonderful fashion,” said Williams.
Following the sign’s unveiling, attendees made their way into the Rose Bowl’s Terry Donahue Pavilion for a private luncheon overlooking the perfectly manicured grass.
