Armory Center for the Arts hosted its “Off the Wall” art auction and gala last week in Pasadena. More than 300 guests enjoyed the Armory’s signature “Strolling Supper,” curated by Gale Kohl of Gale’s Restaurant. More than 20 of the area’s best restaurants donated extraordinary tapas and substantial hors d’oeuvres in support of the Armory’s mission and programs.
Susan Delaney and Gale Kohl co-chaired the event. Their Benefit Committee included Catherine Arias, Max Brennan, Susan Caldwell, Marina Chang, Carolyn Cutler, Tammy Godley, Betsy Greenberg, Megan Hamilton, Maria Khader Karp, Stan Kong, Stephen Nowlin and Shelley Short Ogden.
In addition to fine wines and craft beer from Pasadena’s Congregation Ale House, guest bartender Adam Delaney created three custom, art-themed craft cocktails, featuring the evening’s official spirits sponsor, Tito’s Handmade Vodka.
Patrons bid on more than 80 artworks from contemporary artists, including works by San Gabriel Valley-based artists including Steve Roden, Mark Steven Greenfield, Sigrid Burton, J.T. Burke and Gretel Stephens. Among the highest bids were for editions by L.A.’s Ed Ruscha and sculptor Richard Serra.
For the first time, the Armory partnered with online auction leader Paddle8 to bring Off the Wall to some 600,000 collectors worldwide. Bids came in from as far away as Dubai.
The event raised more than $200,000 in support of the Armory’s contemporary art exhibitions and its no-cost art education programs in Pasadena and throughout the region, including a relatively new program that brings Armory artists into juvenile detention centers throughout L.A. County.
