Beyond Hunger: West Meets East to Benefit Heifer International Oct. 1

Farming and the men and women who feed the world will take center stage at Beyond Hunger: West Meets East, a new event benefiting the nonprofit organization Heifer International. The event, hosted by Heifer and sponsored by NBC Universal, seeks to bring awareness to the development organization’s work to end hunger and poverty around the world. A contingent of Pasadena-area residents is involved with the event.
From 3-6:30 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 1, NBC Universal’s backlot will be transformed to represent agricultural life in Vietnam and the southern United States. Attendees will have the opportunity to interact with Heifer project farmers from both countries either live or through an interactive portal experience. Heifer’s sustainable farming methods, as well as Heifer’s animal ambassadors, including cows, goats, llamas, pigs and more, will also be on display.
“Beyond Hunger: West Meets East” is a unique event for Heifer, as the idea was conceived by a group of dedicated, passionate donors,” said Pierre Ferrari, Heifer’s president and CEO.
“Their enthusiasm for our work is palpable, and this is a tremendous opportunity for others to witness how a small group of people can have a very real impact on the world, as well as to gain an understanding of our unique community-development approach to ending hunger.”
The afternoon will also feature music and food from Southeast Asia and the American South. Wolfgang Puck Catering will cater the event. Entertainment will be provided by Molksy’s Mountain Drifters and LacHong Performing Arts Group.
The event’s host committee includes NBC Chairman of Entertainment Robert Greenblatt as chair, Ted Danson, Ben Feldman, Akbar Gbajabiamila, Justin Hartley, Sean Hayes, Matt Iseman, Jason Katims, Andrea Martin, Chrissy Metz, Mike Schur, Mark Burnett, Aziz Ansari, Amy Poehler, Nicole Richie and Derek Hough. Additional event committee members include William H. and Karla Ahmanson, Jaclyn Ambroso, Miranda Barrett, John and Joy Beaty, Cheryl Bode and Robin Colman, Nancy Fairchild and Greg Boreham, Jeff Browne, Rene and Charles Chiara, Mindy Cohn, Jon Condell, Joan Egrie, Rob Floe, Richard and Cindy Foullon, Adam Friedman, the Friedman-Gluckman family, Margo Kidushim, Marianne Muellerleile, Leyna Nguyen, Barry and Victoria Simon, Leanne Suter, Mark Ridley-Thomas and Arlene Withers.
Heifer International’s mission is to end hunger and poverty while caring for the Earth. For more than 70 years, it has provided livestock and environmentally sound agricultural training to improve the lives of those who struggle daily for reliable sources of food and income. Heifer currently works in more than 25 countries, including the United States, to help families and communities become self-reliant. The goal is to help 4 million families achieve living incomes by 2020, which will allow them to feed their families daily; educate all their children; and have proper housing, water, hygiene and other essential resources.
