A group of local women in 2007, with an invitation from Friends in Deed, opened the Women’s Room, a daytime refuge for women who are alone and homeless or at risk of becoming homeless. On Wednesday, Feb. 22, many of the original group will be joined by a host of new supporters and friends for a 10th anniversary celebration fundraiser at Brookside Golf Club’s Mediterranean Room adjacent to the Rose Bowl. The event begins at 5:30 p.m. Tickets are $50.

The Women’s Room began simply with a hospitality room at Friends in Deed in north Pasadena. It has since added many conveniences, including shower and laundry facilities, housing assistance and a living room where women can relax and talk.
The evening will honor the All Saints Women’s community as the founding organization, represented by founding leaders Monica Hubbard and Jackie Knowles as well as current Women’s Community chair, Aubin Wilson. David Gooler of Rebuilding Together, who made the laundry and shower possible, and the Rev. Michael Bamberger, Friends in Deed board president in 2007, also will receive special recognition.
Hosting the ceremony will be immediate past Executive Director the Rev. Donna Byrns and current Executive Director Rabbi Joshua Levine Grater.
“The Women’s Room touches people every day in tangible, loving and compassionate ways,” Grater said. “The volunteers bring such love and dedication, and our clients are constantly telling us how loved and respected they feel when they are at the Women’s Room. I couldn’t be prouder of this vital program at Friends in Deed, and I know that the next decade will only bring us more and more opportunities to expand our ability to serve more women in need, in bigger and better ways.”
Entertainment will be provided by Grupo Bella Women’s Mariachis. The program will also include “Stories From the Street,” a Heart Matters auction and a raffle.
“The Women’s Room has served hundreds of women since 2007 … [and] has continued to expand its programs, and in the near future, hopes to extend them to overnight,” said Jackie Knowles, the organization’s founding director.
Begun as a place of healing and restoration, the Women’s Room has become part of a continuum of care that has cut the homeless population in Pasadena by 40% since 2007.
