The Pasadena Museum of California Art has expanded its free monthly programming, beginning with the exhibitions “The Golden Twenties: Portraits and Figure Paintings by Joseph Kleitsch,” “Interstitial” and “Gustave Baumann in California,” on view March 5 through Aug. 6.
Building off the PMCA 123 monthly programming — which includes Free First Fridays, Second Saturday Spotlight Talks and Free Third Thursday Evenings — the expanded PMCA 1234 introduces Free Fourth Wednesday Wee-Reads and now pairs Free Third Thursday Evenings with free community programs.
Taking place the fourth Wednesday of each month from 10:30-11:30 a.m., Wee-Reads are a story time, art-making and gallery-viewing hour for children ages 2 to 5 and their families and caregivers. They integrate themes of children’s literature, basic elements of art, and artwork in the PMCA galleries to inspire and invigorate all parts of the imagination. Beginning in March, Free Third Thursday Evenings will include a variety of programs, such as yoga, In Dialogue artists’ conversations, and the Pasadena Symphony Association’s Random Acts of Music.
In addition to PMCA 1234, the PMCA will continue to use the Project Room as an educational space, enabling visitors to participate in ongoing art-making activities as well as a more robust weekend program schedule, which includes a greater number of artists’ talks, exhibition walkthroughs, children’s workshops, family days and more.
Educational initiatives are made possible by a generous gift from Peggy Phelps and a grant from the Sidney Stern Memorial Fund.

Random Acts of Music

Enjoy the sounds of a harpist inside the Main Gallery. Random Acts of Music is a program of the Pasadena Symphony Association and supported by the James Irvine Foundation, the Kenneth T. and Eileen L. Norris Foundation, the Pasadena Arts & Culture Commission and the city of Pasadena Cultural Affairs Division, and the Rose Hills Foundation.
Free Fourth Wednesdays Wee-Reads • 10:30-11:30 a.m.
After a kid-friendly exhibition tour, return to the Project Room where Miss Leah reads children’s literature that connects art and learning. Then get creative during PMCA-led activities that integrate the themes of specially selected stories, basic elements of art, and the artwork in the PMCA galleries.
Recommended for children ages 2 to 5 years old. Caregivers must accompany children.
March 22 • A Printmaking Journey
Put your best foot forward. Follow in the footsteps of Miss Leah on an adventure into the exhibition Gustave Baumann in California to experience the artist’s approach to the printmaking process and to learn about texture. Return to the Project Room to listen to stories about different journeys. Then use markers, pipe cleaners, googly eyes and more to transform a shoe-sole rubbing into a whole new creature.
Wee Read: “We’re Going on a Bear Hunt,” by Helen Oxenbury and Michael Rosen and “Oh the Places You’ll Go,” by Dr. Seuss.

Exhibition Walk-Through: Capturing California
Saturday, March 18 • 4 p.m.
Curator Susan Futterman leads a walkthrough of “Gustave Baumann in California,” from Baumann’s portfolio “In the Hills o’ Brown,” for which he won a gold medal at the Panama-Pacific International Exposition in San Francisco, to his strikingly picturesque Californian subjects. Along the way, Futterman highlights and discusses each step of the artist’s unique printing process.
Children’s Workshop: Watercolor Nature Studies
Saturday, March 25 • 2-4 p.m.
Take inspiration from the remarkable beauty of the California landscape to create a watercolor nature study. This workshop begins with a family-friendly spotlight tour of the gouache landscape studies in “Gustave Baumann in California.”
Drop-ins and all ages welcome. Caregivers must accompany children.
