Local Athletes Earn All-CIF Honors

The CIF Southern Section released its All-CIF winter selections last week, recognizing athletes from Polytechnic, Flintridge Prep, Maranatha, La Salle and Westridge.

Poly senior Colleen Woo took home the highest honor in being named the girls’ water polo Division 5 Player of the Year. Woo was the most well-rounded Panther, scoring 95 goals, recording 67 assists and 116 steals in 29 matches. Freshman Talie Wilmans, who led Poly with 104 goals and 164 points, made the first team, as well as Natalie Clark, who was one of Poly’s top defensive players.

Senior Colleen Woo was named the CIF-SS Division 5 Player of the Year after helping the Poly girls’ water polo team win the CIF championship.

Girls’ water polo coach Ryan Katsuyama guided his squad to a remarkable season with a 24-5 record and was named the Coach of the Year. Poly shared the Prep League crown with Westridge and went on capture the CIF-SS Division 5 championship.

Senior John Genske, who led the Poly boys’ basketball team in scoring and rebounds, earned a spot on the All-CIF Division 4A first team. Junior Sarah Johnson made the girls’ basketball Division 5AA first team.

Flintridge Prep had three athletes recognized by the Southern Section. Girls’ basketball standout Renae Tamura made the Division 3A first team averaging 13 points, nearly seven rebounds and three assists per game. Tamura helped the Rebels win the Prep League title and make a solid postseason run. Flintridge Prep fell to La Salle in the quarterfinals.

Flintridge Prep’s Julia Gonzalez scored 31 goals and recorded 21 assists in 31 matches, earning her a spot on the All-CIF Division 3 first team.

Two Prep’s top soccer athletes also earned All-CIF honors. Helen Schaefer made the Division 3 first team after posting 31 goals and 30 assists in 30 games this season, and Julia Gonzalez was also selected to the first squad after scoring 31 goals and recording 22 assists in 31 matches. The soccer standouts helped Prep win the Prep League title and reach the CIF-SS Division 3 semifinals.
Four Maranatha High School athletes were recognized for their winter seasons, most notably Chris Austin, who helped the boys’ basketball team reach the CIF-SS Division 1AA championship game. The junior forward made the first team averaging a team-high 17 points and five rebounds per contest.
Senior girls’ soccer standout Katy Coats closed out her career at Maranatha as an All-CIF Division 5 first-teamer. She led the team with 11 goals and helped the Minutemen reach the quarterfinals.

Maranatha senior Michael Tufenkian was one of the Minutemen’s top midfielders and made the All-CIF Division 6 first team.

The Maranatha boys’ soccer players were also recognized. Chris Morales and Michael Tufenkian earned a spot on the All-CIF Division 6 first team. Morales led the Minutemen with 13 goals and an assist, and Tufenkian tallied seven goals.

Two La Salle basketball players were named to the first team of their respective divisions. Darius Henderson, who was one of the top scorers on the boys’ basketball team, is an All-CIF Division 2A first-teamer, and Julia Macabuhay, who led the Santa Fe League in scoring, was selected to the girls’ basketball Division 3A first team.
Westridge’s remarkable postseason run did not go unnoticed by the Southern Section. Senior Juliana Favela, who helped the Tigers reach the CIF-SS Division 5AA semifinals, made the first team averaging 17.7 points, 9.9 rebounds, 2.7 steals and 2.1 blocks per game.
