Joyce Racine, Teresa Wolf and Jeanie Paster were among those who attended a previous year’s Walter Hoving Home Backyard BBQ fundraiser. This year’s event will be on Thursday evening, May 25.

The Walter Hoving Home will celebrate its 11th annual Backyard BBQ fundraiser on Thursday evening, May 25. The event, being held at 127 S. El Molino Ave., begins with a silent auction at 5:30. Dinner buffet lines open at 6 p.m. Smokin Steve’s Pit Barbecue will provide the dinners.
Conner Smith and the Living Water Singers will perform as well as the choir of the women from the home.
The fundraiser will benefit Walter Hoving Home, whose primary focus is a discipleship center serving women 18 years and older who have been involved in drug addiction, alcoholism, prostitution and other life-controlling problems.
“You may be wondering about the success rate,” said Hoving Home CEO Beth Greco. “Statistics are an important measurement and in some ways will demonstrate the impact we have on the ladies. But there are some things that are not measurable — how loved a lady feels, how safe a lady feels, how she views herself, how she faces challenges and overcomes them on a daily basis. The change that we hope to see in our ladies can take years to accomplish as they walk with Jesus on a day-to-day journey. There may be setbacks but the success is in getting back up and continuing forward. And one measurement that is hard to put a number to is the individual commitment to Jesus Christ and walking with Him daily; 100% of the ladies who come to us for help are given the opportunity to have a relationship with God and to learn to walk with Him through the Benton Academy [formerly known as the Learning Center, named after our founders, the Rev. John and Elsie Benton]. And to have support and help to overcome their addiction in a loving and safe community,” Greco said.
The Walter Hoving Home, named for the former chairman of Tiffany & Co., expanded to the West Coast in 1984. The Pasadena Home is located in the historic Mira Monte Hotel and has the capacity to provide care for 50 women.
Tickets must be purchased in advance and are $35 each. For more information, contact Joyce Racine at (626) 405-0950.
