State Senate Approves Obama Freeway Plan

The state Senate liked Sen. Anthony Portantino’s proposal, voting 34-1 to approve the former La Cañada Flintridge mayor’s resolution to rename a stretch of the 134 Freeway between Pasadena and Glendale for the 44th president, as the “President Barack H. Obama Freeway.” The proposal now heads to the state Assembly.
Obama attended Occidental College in Eagle Rock from 1979-1981, when he lived in Pasadena and drove along that stretch of freeway.
In a statement, Portantino said: “I am very pleased by the support this freeway naming has garnered in Sacramento and across California. President Obama left office with high approval ratings for his eight terrific years of service to our country. His leadership and time as a District 25 resident played a significant role in determining his future and tremendous legacy. I am very grateful to the residents of my district for suggesting the idea of naming the 134 for our former president.”
Portantino represented Eagle Rock in the state Assembly and currently represents the Glendale side of the 134 freeway as well as the Pasadena junction of the 134 and 210 freeways. If the proposal is approved by the Assembly, new freeway signs would be erected with money from private donors, according to the plan.
