Members of the Boys & Girls Club of Pasadena were motivated to act this past week, following the devastation caused by the hurricanes that hit the United States in August and September.
As news stories showed the rising flood waters and wind-damaged communities, the teenagers from the two Teen Centers in Pasadena arranged to mail care packages to the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Houston and the Boys & Girls Club of Collier County in Florida. As soon as shipping operations resume to normal, they also will send a care package to the Boys & Girls Clubs of Puerto Rico.
The Boys & Girls Club of Pasadena is a part of the nationwide federation of clubs: the Boys & Girls Clubs of America. There are more than 4,000 Clubhouses in the network of more than 1,000 independent organizations that serve more than 4 million young people across the United States. More than 2,000 young people from Pasadena are members of the Boys & Girls Club of Pasadena.
“This project came from the imagination of our members. They felt compelled to act and wanted to support students just like themselves. Making donations to clubs impacted by Hurricanes Harvey, Irma and Maria is a way for them to do something important in a manner that has special meaning for them,” said Brian Davis, executive director of the Boys & Girls Club.
The teens organized a drive collecting school supplies, cleaning supplies and other items requested by the clubs in need. The drive culminated in the bi-weekly “We Own Fridays” event on Friday, Sept. 22. The Boys & Girls Club stays open late every other Friday to provide a safe, fun and enriching environment for Pasadena’s teenagers called “We Own Fridays.” During the festivities, the teens made cards, banners, music and other art to package with the supplies they collected.
The care packages will also include a donation of $1,075, raised by the board of directors at their September meeting. The donation will support the Boys & Girls Club of Collier County in their ongoing recovery efforts. Members of the board contributed to a special collection to support the impacted clubs and the teenage members.
The Boys & Girls Club hosted another “We Own Fridays” event on Friday, Oct. 6, at the Slavik Branch on Del Mar Boulevard. There were no charges for teenage members of the Boys & Girls Club of Pasadena because of the generous support of the club’s donors. Black Tie & Burgers — the Boys & Girls Clubs biggest fundraiser — will be on Saturday, Oct. 14, at the home of Jeh K. Meher in Pasadena. More than 300 of the club’s friends and supporters will gather to celebrate the 80th Anniversary of the Boys & Girls Club of Pasadena. Information is available on the club’s website at bgcapasadena.org/blacktie or by calling Hillary Schenk at (626) 449-9100, ext. 215.
