Free Forum Addresses Climate Change on Nov. 2

The League of Women Voters-Pasadena Area continues its campaign on climate-change education and advocacy with a free public forum from 9 a.m.-noon on Nov. 2, at the Women’s City Club in Pasadena. Two recognized authorities will present innovative, practical approaches to move from fossil fuels to renewable energy.
John Odell, professor emeritus of International Relations at USC and senior fellow of the Centre for International Governance Innovation, will discuss practical remedies for Climate Change with an emphasis on economic implications.
Matt Skolnik, or the Los Angeles County Office of Sustainability, will present a program that offers local jurisdictions an opportunity to move more quickly to renewable energy sources. Skolnik has been working on the Los Angeles Community Choice Energy project since 2015. The project puts local jurisdictions in charge of energy sources by creating a local board to choose the sources and invest profits in new renewable energy sources.
The LWVPA Natural Resources Committee notes that Hurricane Harvey illustrated what a serious threat global warming is to a developed nation. Much warmer waters in the Gulf of Mexico, a result of the increasing greenhouse effect, strengthened Hurricane Harvey resulting in a tragedy in Texas. Hurricane Irma wreaked havoc on Florida and Hurricane Maria decimated the U.S. territory of Puerto Rico, producing a human catastrophe which will take many months to resolve.
The Women’s City Club is located at 160 N. Oakland in Pasadena. The forum is free, but reservations are required. An optional egg breakfast at $25 is available. To register, visit lwv-pa.org or phone (626) 798-0965 by noon on Friday, Oct. 27.
