Tommy Lasorda, the Hall of Famer who managed the Los Angeles Dodgers for two decades, will be honored at the Fred Claire Celebrity Golf Classic, which benefits City of Hope, at Oakmont Country Club on Monday, Aug. 20.

Los Angeles Dodgers Hall of Fame manager Tommy Lasorda has been selected as the recipient of the Celebration of Life award in conjunction with the Fred Claire Celebrity Golf Classic that benefits City of Hope. The second annual event will be held on Monday, Aug. 20, at Oakmont Country Club, with all proceeds benefiting City of Hope’s head and neck and thyroid cancer programs.
“We are honored that Tommy will be with us at our tournament dinner to accept this award,” Fred Claire said. “Tommy’s ongoing involvement with so many great causes and charities is a tribute to him and to his family and makes him an ideal recipient of the Celebration of Life award.”
Hall of Fame baseball player Rod Carew received the first Celebration of Life award last year from Claire and Dr. Stephen J. Forman of City of Hope.
“This year’s tournament will follow the winning theme of our 2017 event — an all-star celebrity will play in each foursome and a reception and dinner will follow,” said Claire, the former executive vice president and general manager of the Dodgers.
Proceeds from last year’s event were designated for the head and neck cancer area but Claire said this year the funds will be divided with the thyroid cancer program in recognition of the late baseball executive Kevin Towers.
“We are grateful for the generosity of so many companies, golfers, celebrities and supporters of City of Hope for getting the tournament off to a great start,” said Claire, who has received ongoing treatment at City of Hope for neck cancer and has now made it his personal mission to raise funds for City of Hope.
Among the celebrities in attendance last year were Hall of Famer Eddie Murray, Shawn Green, Orel Hershiser, Mickey Hatcher, Reggie Smith, Ron Cey, Bill Russell, Steve Yeager, Wes Parker, Ron Fairly, Charlie Hough, Matt Young, Tommy Davis, Jay Johnstone, former Heisman Trophy winner Mike Garrett, basketball great Anne Drysdale, former UCLA basketball coach Jim Harrick and Olympic swimming champion John Naber.
Hall of Fame broadcaster Vin Scully and Lasorda participated in the inaugural tournament by hosting luncheons for auction prize winners. Famed Dodger announcers Jaime Jarrin and Ross Porter were the dinner’s emcees.
The shotgun start for the tournament is scheduled for 11 a.m. A cocktail reception begins at 4:30 p.m. A dinner, which once again will feature auction prizes and an awards program, will take place at 5:30 p.m. In addition, there will be an online auction leading up to the event.
Last year’s auction, in addition to the luncheons with Hall of Famers Scully and Lasorda, included a softball game at Dodger Stadium for 30 people, a flight to Pebble Beach for a foursome for a round of golf, a three-night stay at the famed Mauna Kea Beach Hotel and tickets for special nights provided by the Angels, Padres and Rose Bowl, in addition to many other items.
