Mark Daley scored the lone run in a 1-0 victory over Montebello Cantwell-Sacred Heart last Friday. La Salle improved to 7-2 on the season.

The La Salle varsity baseball team edged visiting Montebello Cantwell-Sacred Heart, 1-0, in a Del Rey League contest last Friday.
The game’s low score is reflective of it being a battle of pitchers. Sophomore Casey Spencer turned in a stellar performance for the Lancers recording eight strikeouts and surrendering only three hits.
Cardinals senior pitcher Mikie Gill faced 22 batters and recorded five strikeouts and gave up five hits.
The lone run of the game came in the bottom of the sixth inning from La Salle junior Mark Daley, who got on base by way of a double that went in between the second- and third-base gap. Daley was able to slide into third following a sacrifice fly from Blake Hardy. After a long pitch count, junior Matt Oliden hit the ball right at the second basemen who bobbled it and gave Daley enough time to score.
The Lancers (7-2 overall record, 2-0 in league) played stingy defense and held the Cardinals offense at bay. The visitors had a runner on third in consecutive innings but failed to get on the board.
The final out of the game came off a Cantwell-Sacred Heart hit that went left of the pitcher’s mound and resulted in a heads-up catch and throw by Spencer.
La Salle head coach Eddie McKiernan said the key to the game was “eliminating free bases, which Casey did a good job of by only allowing one walk.”
The Lancers will host Los Angeles Cathedral in a league game this Friday, March 15, at 6 p.m.
