Local Quarterback Committed to Play at Alabama

After leading Santa Ana Mater Dei to a memorable 12-1 season, Pasadena resident Bryce Young was to have signed a national letter of intent as early as Wednesday to play football for head coach Nick Saban at the University of Alabama.
Young was recently named the Gatorade California Player of the Year, becoming the fourth Monarch to win the award.
The announcement of the signing was set to occur during the Outlook’s press deadline.
Young threw for 4,528 yards, 58 touchdowns and six interceptions, completing 71% of his passes this season. The 5-11, 183-pound five-star recruit, who rushed for 357 yards and 10 scores, is also the top-rated quarterback by 247sports.com
“The kid can throw seven touchdowns on you in one game and he can then go and rush for four touchdowns in the next one,” Mater Dei quarterbacks coach Taylor Kelly told AL.com. “You kind of have to pick your poison with him.”
Young led the Monarchs to 12 consecutive victories, placing Mater Dei in the CIF Southern Section Division 1 championship game against St. John Bosco of Bellflower.
Mater Dei led 28-12 at the half but the Braves scored 27 consecutive points to take a 39-28 lead late in the fourth quarter. Young managed to throw a touchdown pass to keep the game within reach. However, St. John Bosco thwarted a late rally and held on for a 39-34 win.
Young completed 25 of 41 passes for 405 yards, five touchdowns and three interceptions in the title game.
The Monarchs finished the season as the No. 2-ranked high school football team in the nation behind St. John Bosco, according to MaxPreps.

Bryce Young, a Pasadena resident, is the top-rated high school quarterback and led Mater Dei of Santa Ana to a 12-1 season. He committed to play at Alabama and is expected to enroll early for spring ball.

The local athlete, who played at Los Angeles Cathedral for two seasons before transferring to Mater Dei, comes from a program known to produce high-quality quarterbacks. Former Trojan stars Matt Barkley and Matt Leinart played for the Monarchs, as well as current USC quarterback JT Daniels.
“He’s extremely advanced for his age,” Kelly said to AL.com. “JT was extremely advanced at that age as well. Bryce is right there with him, if not better.”
Young had committed to USC but flipped to Alabama on Sept. 22, making the Tide’s current recruiting class No. 2 in the nation, according to 247sports.com. Young, the No. 6-ranked recruit overall, will sign early to enroll for spring ball.
“I’d like to say a huge thank you to coach [Clay] Helton, coach [Graham] Harrell, Gavin [Morris], coach [Keary] Colbert and the rest of the USC staff for the opportunity that they have given me,” Young wrote on Twitter. “I would also like to thank USC fans and community for all of the support. I will always have love for the University of Southern California, and wish for nothing but the best for its players, coaching staff, and fans.”
