Local Artists Encourage Recycled Art

Stefanie Girard likes to joke that she’s been cutting things up and putting them back together since she held her first pair of scissors. At a recent event, she told local community members how taking similar actions can reduce waste.

The event, held on Thursday as part of the Burbank Cultural Arts Commission’s Virtual Burbank series, involved a series of presentations by the artists and local environmental advocates. Commissioner Suzanne Weerts and Amy Hammes, a recycling specialist at the Burbank Recycling Center, encouraged community members to avoid disposing of items, pointing to their guest artists as examples of creative reuse.

Rotary Plants Sycamore Trees for Earth Day

It’s apparently easy being green in San Marino.
In an early observance of Earth Day, the Rotary Club of San Marino completed its part of Rotary International’s quest to plant 1.2 million trees this year — one tree for every Rotarian. Although the local club had to outsource where most of its allotment was planted, it did end up planting two 12-foot Mexican sycamores in Lacy Park this year, both of which were formally commemorated last Thursday. Descanso Gardens to Host Earth Day Celebration

The activities at Descanso Gardens’ Earth Day celebration Sunday will give families the opportunity to plant seeds.

Earth Day at Descanso Gardens is an opportunity for people to help care for the popular botanical gardens, gain a better understanding of nature and to celebrate the planet, said Jennifer Errico, Descanso Gardens’ public relations manager.
On Sunday, April 22, Descanso Gardens will host a day of activities and volunteer opportunities in honor of Earth Day. The grounds, which include several botanical gardens and a sprawling Oak Woodland, will provide a scenic backdrop for returning members and local families seeking a visceral, hands-on Earth Day experience.

Flintridge Bookstore Celebrates Independent Bookstore Day April 28

Flintridge Bookstore & Coffeehouse celebrates Independent Bookstore Day on Saturday, April 28, from 10 a.m.-5 p.m., with activities for all ages. The event includes a reading in conjunction with National Poetry Month and author appearances in conjunction with Earth Day, plus other author signings and special story times with visits from therapy and rescue dogs. The store is also having a book drive for La Cañada Flintridge elementary school libraries. There will be lots of giveaways and a drawing to win a tote bag full of books.
Independent Bookstore Day is a nationwide event created in 2015 to show support for local booksellers and a special time for them to reach out to their communities. Approximately 500 bookstores throughout the country have events planned for this celebration.
Flintridge Bookstore & Coffeehouse is located at 1010 Foothill Blvd.

The Earth has its day every April 22, when people all over the planet gather for rallies, conferences, service projects, and this year at Descanso Gardens, a Botanic Bling.
