The months-long discourse over a hybrid schedule for La Cañada High School and LCHS 7/8 students came to an end as the local school system’s governing board unanimously came to an agreement during a virtual meeting on Tuesday.
Beginning Jan. 5, 2021, the La Cañada Unified School District will implement a schedule that would allow 50% of students in grades 7-12 to receive on-campus instruction two days a week. Pleading with their audience not to forget the horrors inflicted by Nazis during the World War II era, two Holocaust survivors recently shared their stories with about 400 people at the La Cañada High School Auditorium, including LCHS 7/8 students.
La Crescenta resident Leon Prochnik shed tears frequently as he recalled how his family, which he said owned the second-largest chocolate factory in Poland, escaped from its homeland to safety in Lithuania, then to Japan and Canada.
“It was a life-and-death drama,” Prochnik said. “I didn’t know the murder part, because that’s not what my parents talked to me about. Whether LCHS 7/8 students in competitive sports should be granted their request to be excused from physical education because of injuries or other health concerns was an issue taken up by the La Cañada Unified School District Governing Board this week.
How to offer an independent study education course to support such student athletes — if that’s even possible — was a related question at the board’s meeting on Tuesday night.
The amount of time the athlete trains, the athlete’s objective (to reach the Olympics, play in college, etc.) and participation in three sports all figured into questions asked at the meeting.
“We can at least start a conversation,” said board President Kaitzer Puglia.

La Cañada High School 8th-graders are in for an adjustment when they return to school in August.
They’ll have to put their phones down.

Thirty La Cañada High School middle-schoolers signed up this year for a homeroom that, instead of allowing them to catch their breath in the middle of a hectic school day, asked them to ponder and engage with some of the world’s most difficult subject matter.
The period was geared toward completing projects for Chapman University’s annual Holocaust Art and Writing Contest, which, in partnership with the 1939 Society, invites middle school and high school students from around the world to create works of art in response to recorded oral testimonies from survivors.

The “tip line” that district officials promised at a Governing Board meeting last month went live last week and immediately began receiving reports, La Cañada Unified School District administrators said.
“It’s being used,” said Jim Cartnal, the district’s executive director of Pupil and Personnel Programs and Services. “It’s being used somewhat regularly, and in particular with the events leading up to the [walkout] on March 14, it was a venue where various people and students reported concerns related to rumors they heard on social media about possible negative behavior toward the school.”
Superintendent Wendy Sinnette said last week that rumors were unsubstantiated, that there was no threat to campus on March 14 and, with additional security on site, the walkout proceeded peacefully. Continue reading “Spartan Tip Line Offers Anonymity”

Jimmie Myers said he believes students in his zero period orchestra class are benefiting from the extra shuteye they’re getting this school year.
How can he tell?
“They laugh at more of my jokes,” he said.
Spurred by research even more scientific than Myers’ methodology, La Cañada Unified School District opted to start the school day later this year so the adolescents attending La Cañada High School and LCHS 7/8 have an opportunity to get more valuable sleep. La Cañada Unified School District officials hope an overnight trip to Stanford University will lead to a lasting change in their school community’s culture.
A small contingent of educators, administrators, teachers, parents and students from La Cañada High School and LCHS 7/8 traveled to Stanford last weekend to talk about student stress.
Attending along with similarly high-achieving districts from across the United States, LCUSD was selected to be part of at the 13th Challenge Success conference, which, yes, asked its guests to challenge the typical notion of success.
