State Sen. Anthony Portantino welcomed La Cañada Elementary School kindergarten teacher Mandy Redfern to Sacramento to congratulate her on being a finalist for 2018 California Teacher of the Year. Redfern and other outstanding teachers were recognized at a reception in the Capitol on Monday night. Portantino, who is also from LCF, said his children attended La Cañada Elementary School.
“Mandy is just an awesome teacher and it was such an honor to see her in Sacramento receiving this recognition. Her hard work and dedication to our district as well as her patience and dedication with helping educate my two daughters, Sofia and Bella, makes this recognition even more special,” commented Portantino.
The teacher of the year recognition is sponsored by the California Department of Education and presented by California Casualty and the California Teachers of the Year Foundation.
It’s become a tradition, and for that, La Cañada Unified School District Superintendent Wendy Sinnette said she and her colleagues are most grateful.
For the seventh consecutive year, the La Cañada Flintridge Educational Foundation raised $2 million for the district, money that will be used to help fund smaller class size, to recruit and retain talented teachers and staff, and to fund programs in visual and performing arts as well as provide an array of math and science courses. They’re still talking.
“Still working on the numbers,” as La Cañada Teachers Association President Mandy Redfern put it in an email Wednesday.
Representatives of the LCTA and the La Cañada Unified School District continued to negotiate teacher pay this week. The two sides met on Monday and Tuesday, according to LCUSD Superintendent Wendy Sinnette.

The small army of La Cañada Unified School District’s teachers at Tuesday’s Governing Board meeting, clad in their matching blue T-shirts and toting black balloons, signaled that no accord had been reached between the teachers’ association and the district.

La Cañada Unified School District teachers say they want to be paid salaries that are in line, long-term, with comparable districts such as San Marino and Manhattan Beach.
The district’s top administrator says she and the Governing Board share that goal, identifying the retention of high-quality teachers as the top priority in the Local Control Accountability Plan that is part of the state’s Local Control Funding Formula.
