It’s been a long journey for administrators, coaches and athletes, but high school sports are officially back in Pasadena.
Cross-country teams began running after being given the green light by state and county officials, and some schools have set up volleyball nets outdoors to give players an opportunity to play while adhering to health orders.
Mayfield Senior held its first sporting event in 358 days last Thursday, hosting San Marino High School and Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy to outdoor volleyball matches. The sight of volleyball players competing outdoors while wearing masks was strange, but Cubs Athletic Director Steve Bergen was just glad to give the athletes a chance to play, even if it is a shortened season with no playoffs or championships. Athletes from Polytechnic, Mayfield Senior, St. Francis, Maranatha and Flintridge Sacred Heart competed in the CIF Southern Section Track and Field Finals at El Camino College in Torrance last weekend.
Xian Shively concluded his career at Poly on a high note by winning the Division 4 crown in the 3,200-meter run. The senior standout finished in 9 minutes, 17.27 seconds and will move on to this Saturday’s Masters Meet at El Camino College.
Athletes from Polytechnic, Mayfield Senior, Maranatha High School, Flintridge Sacred Heart and St. Francis turned in solid performances in the CIF Southern Section preliminaries last week and qualified for the championship finals.

The Polytechnic varsity softball team rallied from a two-run deficit and defeated visiting rival Flintridge Prep, 4-3, in a Prep League game last week.
Trailing 3-1 in the bottom of the fifth, the Panthers got an RBI sacrifice fly from Maddie Magee and a run-scoring single from Megan Kelleher to tie the game. Poly recaptured the lead in the sixth when Ella Cornwell blasted a single to score Ali Ulin.
Pitcher Brennah Bronk retired three Rebels in the top of the seventh to pick up the win and help Poly improve to 4-0 in league. She allowed four hits, three runs and struck out seven. Continue reading “Polytechnic Edges Rival Flintridge Prep, 4-3”
