Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti (center) was hosted by Sir Michael’s Party Rentals owner Michael Nogueira and his wife Eugenie at their home for a special campaign event in preparation for the upcoming mayoral election. Garcetti was recently endorsed by President Barack Obama, who said “Eric is my friend, loyal ally and visionary mayor of Los Angeles.”
The Lanterman Historical Museum Foundation will host its annual Ragtime Tea Dance on March 12 from 12-5 p.m. in the Lanterman House Ballroom, featuring musicians Ian Whitcomb, Sheila-Murphy Nelson and more.

It is with tremendous grief, tempered by compassion and understanding, that we share news of the passing of our father, brother, uncle and friend, Bruce Phillip Graham. A World War II veteran will speak about his service at 7 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 27, at Crowell Public Library on behalf of the San Marino Historical Society.
Veteran Jeff Arnett, 92, will talk about his service in Asia during the war, including a three-week flight from the U.S. to India, his service in Burma (now Myanmar) and China and crossing the infamous and dangerous “Hump,” a name given by Allied pilots to the eastern end of the Himalayan mountains over which they flew military transport aircraft to aid Chinese forces. Longtime local resident Tim Sloan, Wells Fargo’s CEO and president, will be the featured speaker at San Marino City Club’s Feb. 21 dinner meeting, it has been announced.
Sloan became CEO in October 2016 and also serves on Wells Fargo’s Board of Directors as well as being a member of the company’s operating and management committees.
“Mr. Sloan is uniquely situated to discuss the meeting’s topic: ‘A CEO Perspective on the Financial Services Industry,’” a City Club spokesperson said. “His experience in all aspects of banking, both wholesale and retail, will provide insights into broader financial and economic issues.” Continue reading “Sloan to Speak at City Club on Feb. 21”
The Huntington Library announced recently that it has acquired a unique 10-volume edition of “The Life and Writings of John Muir” that incorporates 260 original photographs — most by Herbert W. Gleason, a nature photographer who inspired the work of Ansel Adams. The items were purchased at the Huntington’s 20th annual Library Collectors’ Council meeting held in January.
The Council also purchased “A Monograph on the Genus Camellia,” an outsize volume containing sumptuous hand-colored aquatint plates after watercolors by Clara Maria Pope, one of a small number of women in England who pursued an artistic career in the late 18th and early 19th centuries.
Additional purchases included manuscripts by a close member of Galileo’s circle and by an American Revolutionary War officer, as well as a genealogical roll of arms from the Elizabethan era.
“During the past two decades, the Library Collectors’ Council has helped us acquire more than 100 significant items — including rare books, individual manuscripts, archival collections and photographs — and spent nearly $3.9 million doing so,” said David Zeidberg, Avery director of the Library at the Huntington. “We are enormously grateful to the Council for their generous support over the years.”
