Chmielewski, Lan Finish 3rd in Finals Tournament

The La Cañada High School varsity boys’ tennis team had two singles and doubles semifinalists in the Rio Hondo League Tournament finals at Arcadia Park last week, but the Spartans were denied league crowns by league champion San Marino.
Lucas Chmielewski and Phillip Lan were close to defeating Titans John Carter and Allan Liu having won the first set and leading in the second, 4-2. The tables turned on the Spartans as the San Marino duo rallied to win the next four games to take the set.
Chmielewski had suffered an injury that forced him to serve underhand. He and Lan finished third in doubles after Gabriel and Gerard Llanes defaulted.
Reid Schreck, who was seeded as the No. 2 singles player, fell to San Marino’s Andrew Wong and conceded to teammate William Lan, who finished third.
San Marino’s Leo Wang won the singles competition, and Bryce Pereira and Connor Lee captured the doubles crown.
La Cañada traveled to Los Alamitos to take on the No. 7-seeded Griffin in the first round of the CIF Southern Section Division 1 playoffs on Wednesday.
