The City Council voted 4-0 at its meeting Tuesday to award Gonzalez Goodale Architects with the contract to renovate the new City Hall building, agreeing to a fee of no more than $505,000.
The architects will be tasked with turning the former Sport Chalet corporate headquarters office building — for which the city is paying $11.23 million — building into a workable City Hall. City Councilman Jonathan Curtis was not at Tuesday’s meeting, but his fellow council members gave the contract the go-ahead when they approved the consent agenda.
In their pitch materials to the New City Hall Renovation Committee, architects with Gonzalez Goodale suggested details such as adding a logo, color and textures to the slope in front of the 27,881-square foot building and using drought-tolerant plants to complement existing trees and architecture.
Inside, in addition to repainting and modernizing, the architects envisioned a feature wall opportunity where a memorial or a local artist’s work might be displayed.
Previously, the Pasadena-based firm’s staff worked on projects, including city hall space planning in Pasadena, a city hall addition in Simi Valley and a city hall and council chambers renovation in Brea.
“This took us a ways to get here and it’s an important step forward,” Mayor Michael Davitt said. “We’re so happy to have you on board, thanks for the work.”

PUBLIC SAFETY UPDATE
Crescenta Valley Sheriff’s Captain Chris Blasnek told council members there were fewer burglaries last month, with four residential and four other burglaries — including one at a Round Table Pizza that presented solid leads.
“We do have some workable information that we’re using,” Blasnek said, adding that some clues came from a safe that was recovered at La Cañada High School. “They left us a little bit of video tape, too, so it’s nice of them to help us out a little bit.”
