The Martin Severance Chapter of Daughters of the American Revolution in Pasadena recently presented the Community Service Award to Wellness Works for its “Not on Our Watch” program that raises awareness of U.S. military veterans who commit suicide as a result of post-traumatic stress disorder, traumatic brain injury, military sexual trauma and chronic pain.
The program, launched in June 2015, brings seasoned veterans to the Colorado Street Bridge to stand watch for four days once a year, raising awareness and community support to address the fact that an average of 23 veterans commit suicide every day in America. The event was created by veterans for veterans to send a symbolic message that they “will leave no soldier behind.”
“Addressing veteran suicides cannot be solely the responsibility of veterans, their families and the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs,” said Phyllis Lynes, regent of the Martin Severance Chapter, DAR. “It is because of supportive nonprofits like Wellness Works that veterans have an opportunity to heal.”
Wellness Works provides a safe and welcoming environment where veterans can begin to heal from the stress of military service through support groups, special events and partnerships with nonprofit organizations that provide mental health care. Wellness Works also offers training and educational opportunities for self-care.
