Salvation Army’s Red Kettle Kickoff Breakfast Nov. 19

STEAM:Coders announced that Lorne M. Buchman, president of ArtCenter College of Design, will receive the Leadership Award at the second annual “Virtual Celebration: Pathways to STEAM Success” on Nov. 4.
The Corporate Vanguard Award will also be presented to SoCalGas and Alexandria Real Estate Equities Inc. for their long-time commitment to the STEAM:Coders mission to inspire underrepresented and underserved students and their families through science, technology, engineering, art and math (STEAM), in preparation for academic and career opportunities.
“The Leadership Award honors individuals with outstanding qualities who have dedicated themselves to the betterment of our communities, through educational opportunities,” according to a statement from the organization. “The Corporate Vanguard Award aims to showcase institutions’ commitment to equity in education and dedication to helping us build stronger communities.”
The STEAM fields represent a tremendous number of opportunities.
Raymond Ealy, executive director of STEAM:Coders said, “Since our founding and, especially this difficult year, Mr. Buchman has been a steadfast advocate for creating pathways to success through the STEAM disciplines. We can think of no better recipient who has been a remarkable instrument of positive change for Greater Los Angeles.”
“The pandemic has drawn to light the inequities in access to education and highlighted how important our work is in bridging the digital divide. Even taken on its own, Mr. Buchman’s record of accomplishment makes him a remarkable leader,” Ealy added. “His work to improve educational equity and increase accessibility for arts education has been invaluable to the city of Pasadena and beyond. Among his many accomplishments, he has made an ArtCenter education more affordable and provided opportunities for future artists and designers — regardless of circumstance — to pursue an education to create and influence change.”
Buchman is an international art and design education leader. His latest book, “Make to Know: From Spaces of Uncertainty to Creative Discovery,” will be available in the fall of 2021. He also hosts “Change Lab: Conversations on Transformation and Creativity,” a podcast in which he conducts interviews with leading artists, designers and cultural innovators.
This past school year, remote learning has exposed the inequities in education and highlighted the “digital divide.” The proceeds from this year’s event will help provide students with free math tutoring, computer science courses and internships.
“SoCalGas is committed to providing customers with safe and reliable service goes beyond natural gas. They are also dedicated to improving the quality of life in the communities they serve,” Ealy said, adding “Alexandria leads the way for positive change to benefit human health, local communities and society. STEAM:Coders honors both their mission and partnerships as it continues to mitigate the digital divide.”
