Foothill Autism Alliance Presents Job Skills Panel on Nov. 8

The Foothill Autism Alliance will present a panel on employment skills for individuals in the autism spectrum, called Transitioning and Employment Skills, for ages 14 years and older on Nov. 8, from 7:30-9:30 p.m., at Westmoreland Academy.
There will be networking opportunities at 7 p.m., before the panel discussion.
From kindergarten to high school graduation, students with autism are rarely encouraged to dream about future jobs. FAA has put together a panel discussion of teenagers and adults on the autism spectrum discussing workforce supports, hopes and dreams. Information will focus on transitioning individuals with autism, which includes prepping them in workplace survival skills — from breathing exercises to relieving stress to punctuality. As part of their preparation, students take field trips to the human resources department locations at 20th Century Fox Studios and Northwestern Mutual Insurance, where the human resources director interviewed candidates for open positions.
“It looks really simple, but nobody’s doing this,” said Joanne Lara, an Autism Works Now! teacher, in a statement. “Nobody is asking them what they want to do with their lives.”
Autism Works Now! Director Susan Osborne and Lara will be the featured speakers at the event.
