The inaugural Fred Claire Celebrity Golf Classic benefitting the City of Hope was held recently at Oakmont Country Club. Claire, a Pasadena resident and former longtime executive vice-president and general manager of the Los Angeles Dodgers hosted the sold out event, which raised $230,000 for the City of Hope’s head and neck cancer research program. Hall of Fame baseball player Rod Carew was honored with the Celebration of Life Award. “Rod’s recent health journey is truly a celebration of life and his ongoing efforts on behalf of heart disease and his history of being involved in great causes to help other others is an inspiring story,” said Claire.
Numerous sports celebrities and golfers enjoyed the tournament and fundraising dinner, including Eddie Murray, Orel Hershiser, Mickey Hatcher, Maury Wills, Reggie Smith, Bill Russell, Steve Yeager, Carew’s former Angel teammates Doug DeCinces and Rick Burleson, Heisman Trophy winner Mike Garrett, former UCLA basketball coach Jim Harrick and John Naber, one of America’s most successful Olympic champions with four gold medals in swimming.
