The Pasadena Playhouse and Innovate Pasadena, a community nonprofit organization dedicated to advancing Greater Pasadena as a hub of innovation in tech, design and other industries, recently welcomed Pasadena’s innovation community and guests for a fun and immersive gathering — “Pirates, Innovation and Rum” — a close-up get-together on the Pasadena Playhouse stage to celebrate the unconventional and inviting production of “Pirates of Penzance.”
Guests could wander the stage, check out props and mingle with the members of Innovate Pasadena and the cast while enjoying great food and pirate-worthy cocktails. The Playhouse has taken an innovative approach in staging the current production, and this behind-the-scenes event was a fun, unexpected way for IP to showcase that innovation is about more than technology.
For this production, the audience experiences the Playhouse like never before — the performance area is flipped backward with seating as well as a tiki bar on stage, ready for scallywags to partake. Some seats even require audience members to be mobile throughout the performance with no assigned seating. These guests can sit in a ball pit, hang out on a bench, take a seat on the deck or even visit the tiki bar at any time during the show. Innovate Pasadena helps connect the organizations and individuals that make Pasadena a center for innovation and economic development, visit innovatepasadena.org for more information. “Pirates of Penzance” runs through Feb. 25; visit pasadenaplayhouse.org for more information.
